She makes a GREAT argument.
By the end of her answer - I absolutely agree that our education system is in trouble.

In case you couldn't follow that.... here is a version with subtitles (http://youtube.com/watch?v=WALIARHHLII&mode=related&search=)

That is so funny I almost wet myself.
I know some people who are really into pagents... and I just don't get it. We have a world full of religious people who spend their entire lives worshipping the physical...

Just awesome.

My wife (who sent me the link) and I have decided to move to Charleston. We really liked it when we honeymooned there; now we figure our nascent offspring should be able to dominate the other children. Or at least blind them with their inherited pastiness.

Despite her hilarious response, none of you were boggled by the question?
The question says 20% of americans cannot locate the US on a map. Yet the question doesn't qualify the statistic with who was polled and how the study was performed. Are infants and toddlers included? Are we talking about adult legal citizens only? Ambiguous statistics are frustrating. They do a better job on Family Feud.

Hot chicks like that don't have to be smart or know how to make coherent sentences. Blame the people who've fallen all over themselves to get her by every obstacle she's come across so they could get in her pants
Undoubtedly true for the past couple of years, but I'm pretty sure I could've told you where the US was on a map when I was in the first grade. And it's knowledge that served me well when I found myself alone in the Italian Dolomites in the second grade. I just pointed to the US and they shipped me back.

knoxworth, most of the country can't locate Iraq on a world map let alone most of the major countries (and it goes without saying many of the smaller European nations), hell I saw a youtube video just a couple weeks ago where most people interviewed couldn't remember what month/day/year 9/11 happened on, or what city it happened in. This country is straight up ignorant and people like Miss SC, as fun as she is to laugh at, represents a HUGE chunk of the population

Step 3

Step 4
Read my post:
The question is a direct reference to a study done by National Geographic. The study looked at the "geographic literacy" of young adults between 18 and 24 years of age. Here is the "short" version:
The National Geographic-Roper Public Affairs 2006 Geographic Literacy Study (http://www.forumforeducation.org/resources/index.php?item=143&page=32)
The study shows that:
respondents have a fairly good understanding of how to use a map
Six in ten (63%) cannot find Iraq on a map of the Middle East
Three-quarters cannot find Indonesia on a map
30% think the most heavily fortified border in the world is between the United States and Mexico (it's actually between North- and South Korea)
Majorities overestimate the total size of the U.S. population and fail to understand how much larger the population of China is
Three-quarters (74%) believe English is the most commonly spoken native language in the world, rather than Mandarin Chinese
Half or fewer of young men and women 18-24 can identify the states of New York or Ohio on a map (50% and 43%, respectively)Full survey here: http://www.nationalgeographic.com/roper2006/index.html

Yeah and she'd probably ask stupid questions like "what's that clunking sound when my camera is off" or "how do I get that film look with my 100B" or maybe "100b vs 'insert latest camera model here', which one is better". Yeah she's so dumb she'd ask questions just like that........... uh, oops, wait a second:huh:

They should be able to answer basic questions with complete sentences, though. What does it tell the younger kids when someone like her still manages to do so well in life despite being completely uneducated, simply because she's beautiful?
David Jimerson
08-29-2007, 10:43 AM
Well . . .
It's actually a valuable lesson that they're going to learn one way or the other. Sad, but true. Not likely to change, either.
Still, it doesn't speak to the state of education in general, which is all I was getting at.
Kirk Gillock
08-29-2007, 10:50 AM
It's obvious what happened. She practiced for the Question portion of the competition and had certain responses all prepared. Just like we do for job interviews. She didn't hear the question well, then got nervous, and just put all her prepared responses together. "I personally believe" and "Iraq" and "South Africa" and "for the children".
But she'll get more publicity from her mistake than the winner will ever get. (Who did win?)
Reminds me of Miss USA (or America), Vanessa Williams. She is the best known and most successful winner of the contests history. Mainly because they "stripped" her title after some naughty photos turned up.
I guess we find losers far more interesting than winners.
Edit: Even though I sympathize with her, she obviously failed the question. And the fact that she came in 4th shows how little the "Intelligence" portion of the contest matters and how degrading and pathetic all these beauty contests are. Eventually pageants like these will become history and we will be embarrassed that we ever had women walk on stage as we scored them on their beauty. Or, at least, I hope we will be embarrassed.

How does this not speak to the state of education? And how is this a lesson learned when this woman still came in 4th? She's still Miss South Carolina, she's still got lots and lots of exposure and people falling all over themselves to make way for her (Today show hosts answering her questions, for example). People like her are role models for younger kids and they see this kind of "Don't learn, just be beautiful!" attitude, and you know what? It works.
David Jimerson
08-29-2007, 11:26 AM
How does this not speak to the state of education?
As I said above, answers given by pageant contestants have always been vapid, with some exceptions. If you only looked at academic competitions (quiz bowls, that sort of thing), you might come away with a different perception about the state of education. It's all about the general pool you're drawing water from. In more modern times, pageant organizers have said they value academic skills above "beauty," but come on now . . . who really believes that?
Now, this is an extreme case, but its extremeness ought to bolster what I'm trying to say -- it's the individual, and not necessarily indicative of the whole system.
It works. It's a lesson learned, because it's generally the way the world works. Beauty gets you a long way, even in the complete absence of any other marketable trait.
Do I prefer it that way? Of course not. But it's how the world has always been, and is likely always to be. Pretty people simply get themselves in doors more easily.
GenJerDan

Do I prefer it that way? Of course not. But it's how the world has always been, and is likely always to be. Pretty people simply get themselves in doors more easily.
Fer sure. Look at me, for instance. :)
That being said, and not having seen anything of her other than the pageant question, that...um...answer...really wasn't indicative of anything other than a real lack of the ability to think on her feet.

Sideswiped? What?
It was the question portion of the pageant. Was she surpirsed that she was asked a question? Has she never seen a pageant?
Pretty much the only thing a person has to do in preparation for the question part of one of these contests is to stay focused and pay attention. All she had to do was listen to the question, and she still messed it up.
The whole Today thing was a joke. She would have been better off saying English isn't her first language, or that she had major surgery that day and was heavily medicated.

The miss south carolina thing = sad
the French thing is shocking, a whole room full of random people and 58% don't know that the sun is the center of the universe and the earth's only orbital is the moon?
I was thinking the punchline of the youtube video would be that the audience would return a 100% vote for the moon and the guy would feel like a dope for needing their help ... but, wow. Glad no one asked me to bet money on what the audience would say - never would have predicted that ... wow.

Well, like all others countries we have our "dumb ass"... :)
I just don't understand why they feel the need to show us how ignorants and stupids they are...

because we are Americans and we found evidence that people in other countries might actually be dumber than us. :)
now we just need to find some videos of incredibly fat and lazy people from other countries

Nothing will ever surprise me again after seeing a woman on 5th Grader be very sure that there were 352 feet in 2.5 yards, then decide to go with the girl's answer of 78 feet instead.
(Maybe it was 358. I was laughing too hard.)

Honestly, how do people actually get by in this society? That's what amazes me... Seriously. How do they function? Natural selection clearly isn't working out the way it was intended...

And in a related note, I just got back from Wal-Mart.

I LOVE how Mario is trying to hold in from busting up lol. That dude should get a pay raise. I would have lost it :)
The dumb chick should have just said... "You know what? I didn't know that... What a shocking statistic. I am shocked." ...and then kept her mouth shut.
and left it at that. Had she actually paid attention to the question, she probably would have said something that would have made at least SOME sense to a child in 1st grade.

At least he has the drugs and the 'roids as a semblance of an excuse.
Plus he's nuts.

Wow, talk about trying to make a guy look like a moron. The interviewer was an a-hole and he's the one who ended up looking bad. Not very cool of that guy at all.

That whole Fox interview made me feel bad for everybody.
I hate interviewers who won't let the people answer the question to the fullest.

Not only did he not let the guy finish a statement - it seems he went out of his way to make people like him (athletes who use 'roids) look like unintelligent morons who can't even answer simple questions. He kept saying "You're not getting the point!", but he WAS getting the gist of the questions and answering them honestly.

Isn't that the standard modus operandi with Sean Hannity?
Now, Bill O'Reilly...
