View Full Version : De Niro pimped Leo to Scorsese

I have never listened to the commentary on Gangs of New York (I love Scorsese) and much to my pleasure Scorsese stated that De Niro told him that Leo was a 'talented kid' who was quite good and that he shou8ld work with him one day.

Apparently, Bobby never volunteers information to Marty unless asked, but his opinion on Leo was without asking

I love Leo.

I have always liked him, as far back as Gilbert Grape and the more I see of him as he matures (Gangs, The Aviator, The Departed), the more he moves up the ladder as the actor I'd love to work with.

I bring this up due to knowing it seems to be love or hate with him.

What is your opinion on Leo ? (So you actually think De Niro and Scorsese are in bad judgement? )

He definitely intrigued me in Gilbert Grape....
Catch me if you can is when I started taking him seriously.

But the Departed sealed the deal.
Damn - THAT was a performance.

Anyone who thinks he's just another pretty boy just isn't paying attention as far as I'm concerned.

I think he made a very very smart decision to kind of fall off the radar for a bit, and then come back as a man.

I do like him, but for the most part, I still feel like he lacks gravity for a lot of the roles he's doing. Maybe it's his voice, I dunno. But he is surely dedicated to doing the kind of work he wants to do, and I admire him for that.

There is no doubt that he has chops.

I really dug him in:
-Gilbert Grape
-The Quick and the Dead
(which is also where I first caught the amazing talent of Russell Crowe)
-Romeo + Juliet
-Titanic
-Catch Me If You Can
-The Aviator
-The Departed
-Blood Diamond

My only thing with him is his still-boyish looks. I mean hell, mid-thirties before he starts playing "men" roles? Of course, this seems to be the case with many actors working today.

I realized he was a truly talented actor when I saw The Basketball Diaries.

I really like him.

He puts on a believable performance in all of his roles.

DiCaprio is great. He should have been nominated for Departed NOT Blood Diamond though. Each a great performance, but him in Departed was better IMO

I can't say that I've always admired/respected him, though I have gained respect for him over the last couple of years. Used to hate him :)

Far and away, his best performance was "Basketball Diaries". Other times, he is hit or miss (for me). If you haven't seen this one, you should check it out. It's been probably 7 years or so since I saw this, but I still remember his performance.

Yea, I about crapped my pants when I saw his performance in The Departed. Wow. The Basketball Diaries... also great work.

Same here, J.R. :) Gilbert Grape was when you could see that he had what it takes. He became the role. He's had a few misses, but far fewer than any other actor. Even Blood Diamond (which I thought would be horrible, based on the trailers) was incredible. I even own the DVD.

The great thing is that, even after starring in the BIGGEST blockbuster of all time - Titanic, he didn't peak or fade away and, more importantly, he didn't get the BIGGEST EGO of all time. He's smart with his choices of roles and he's not afraid to share the spotlight with other equally talent actors (The Departed).

On top of all that, he's got my respect for his environmental awareness campaigns and that he drives a little EV car. :) If I say any more, it's going to sound like I wanna marry the guy. (Off-topic: What are the marriage laws like where Leo lives?)

I thought he really brought it when he worked with De Niro on This Boy's Life. He was just a kid but held his own next to De Niro and I believe it was Ellen Barkin. This film is a must see. Also, he was pretty cool in Woody Allen's Celebrity.

In all seriousness, he had a stint on Family Ties and his talent was evident there.

when was he on family ties? I thought growing pains was all he did as far as sitcoms go.

Sorry I thought you might remember the line from "This Boy's Life". DeNiro's character is constantly yelling at the kids, "Shut your #%# !@* pie hole".

Ha! Yes, I remember now...that was hilarious. The film, though, gives me creepy goosebumps.

probably has the second best agent next to tom cruise... di-cap (in my opinion) has made a whole lotta great role choices and still has his whole career ahead of him... he's only like 32. romeo... and the beach are my favs. i didn't really care for him in growing pains though... kirk cameron and allan thicke were "the man" back then!!! lol didn't di-cap produce a documentary recently??

I never really cared for him until The Departed and Blood Diamond. He was excellent in both roles. Prior to that, I found him okay in some things and not really believable in others.

Leo, yes. Talented lad. I'm sure I'll work with him some day.
