Hey everybody,
We've just completed a short 'in-house' commercial for our production studio entitled 'prick'. It's a little bit naughty but it's mostly suggestive. Enjoy!
Studio shoot with HVX and firestore + Movietube 35mm adapter and Nikon primes.
We'd love any feedback,
Thanks!

nice! loved the tone and feel of this. was the editing all done in FCP? i'm trying to figure out what transition/effect you used on that very last cut after the closeup on the woman's eyes??

Did you use Movietube LT version? Curious how much it costs altogether for HVX cam? How would you compare it with other 35mm such as Brevis or SGPro?

Hi Guys, Thanks for the kind words. In response to your questions:
The quick edits you see (like the final shot) were intended to mimic film 'flash frames'. So the footage was ramped in speed and then additive dissolves were used to flash the luminance between shots.
As for how the Movietube compares to SGPro and Brevis etc. I'm afraid the MovieTube is the only 35mm adapter we've ever used (apart from some Ghetto 'homebrew' versions). We're really happy with the way it works (it's solid as a rock) but it's not cheap. In fact, we hire both that and the HVX's whenever we shoot. The technology moves so fast that it makes more sense for us to hire equipment than invest in a system that has such a short shelf life.
Here's a couple of production stills from the shoot to give a better idea of the setup:

that's cool. how long did it take to tattoo her and was it easy to come off? what was used for the fake tattooing anyway?

In the above pics, you are set up on the opposite side from what was in the clip. What happened there? I also have to comment on the way you lit her eyes at the end. Very nice. How did you achieve that?

The tattoo ink was provided by our make up artist. Not sure if it had a name or was just generic black make-up. It took a loooong time; about 5 hours in all.
As for the backwards setup: we moved to the opposite side to pick up the closeups. Nothing untoward going on, just taken from the other side.
For lighting the eyes, we had a few small dedo lights kicking around which we would move from shot to shot. We used these to pick up reflections in the eyes and as hair lights etc.
Thanks again guys,
Hangman.

pretty sick!
very slick awsome use of timing and sound.
One thing that bugs me though is when you pan the girl but use a gradient.
I always thing gradients looks best on static shots as you see to much grain on moving pans.

Really liked the clean look!
The sound of the tattooing machine gave it away a little IMO, maybe a sound treatment like used in films when people are druged or wake up after a black out and donīt hear right could make the beginning a lttle more disturbing...?
But hey, people without tattoos probably wonīt get it anyway until they see the machine!
Was this your own studio or a rented one? Iīm interested in building a seemless backdrop like this, do you have any hints for me?
Again, cool style!

Thanks for the feedback guys.
4mat, i think i know what you mean with the gradients, but it's all about continuity too. I think if we had removed the gradients and vignettes for the moving shots they would have stuck out too much. I guess you just have to find the balance.
Spartacus, you're right, if you've got tattoos then the sound might give the game away, although we were also hinting at something a bit more sexual as well.... perhaps your mind just isn't fithy enough! ;) The studio was rented, it was a great space, but i'm afraid i can't give any clues on building something of that scale.
Thanks again,
hangman.
