View Full Version : P2 Dissection
Has anyone taken apart a P2 card? (maybe a broken one or someone that has more money then they know what to do with it) I really would like to see what one looks like inside. Are the SD cards soldered in or clipped? Maybe there is a way to mod a 4gb to a 8 or 16. If anyone has pictures I would love to see them.
Thanks,
Tom

Andrew Hoffman from Spec-Comm posted pictures before, many months ago.
You wiill not be able to modify an existing card and turn it into an 8GB, 16GB or even higher capacity card. "NO USER SERVICEABLE PARTS INSIDE" as they like to say...
Can you post a link? I have been searching for it with no luck.
Thanks

The Sd cards are clipped. However, this does not mean that you can upgrade the capacity - that is burned into the raid controller and cannot be changed. If you try to put bigger cards in you will notice that your P2 will keep the same capacity - the raid doesn't address the memory above what it expects to find.

Making the jump from 8gb to 16gb has another hurdle, you've got to graduate from standard SD to SDHC cards.
Hmm. Interesting. I wonder if it would be possible to get a bunch of the same size sd cards and number them and just keep swapping them as they fill up... Good SD cards are cheap by comparison.

that sounds like SO much more work that it's worth

Tom is making a lot of sense here. SD cards are really cheap these days. If it were possible to pop open a p2, swap the cards and put it back in the camera, then that would save a lot of money. P2 cards have got cheaper but SD cards are nearly free by comparison.

Well all i got to say is if you figure it out, let me know, haha. Brilliant if it works.

You can open up a small P2 card, pop out the SD cards, and put in your own. I've seen a disassembled card; in fact I think they used to even offer a repair kit in the early days that would let you open up the card.
But putting in a different size? That won't work, as I understand. You can only replace the SD cards with the same size and speed.
I think the manufacturing changed when they went to 16 or 32 sizes, and there are no longer SD cards inside.

You are correct Barry.
Since they moved to the "R Series" cards they have removed the SD cards and connectors and just placed memory right on the circuit board. The older ones (8GB and older) you can change out all of the cards with the same size only and you can't mess with card zero. It must contain some special configuration data of some sort. But cards one through three are blank and can be changed out if you want. But this doesn't have any kind of benefits as far as I can see.
