Hi, When I play back 24fps video in vegas from the timeline it seems to slow down to as low as 15 fps. I don't understand I have a 3 gigahertz computer with 1.5 gigs of ram. I have a propritery graphics running off the mother board, could that be why the frame playback drops so low or is something else wrong.

Playback in Vegas is mainly CPU intensive. (I'm not sure if more RAM helps.) So whatever adds to processor overhead will adversely affect previews in Vegas. For instance, adding effects - e.g., color correction, etc. will bog things down. Playing with high rez and/or highly comrpessed footage (HDV) may also add to your woes. You may also have mixed fps problem - you say your video is 24 fps (which camera are you using?) but make sure your project properties match.
In addition to changing the obvious (like going from "preview" to "draft" quality in the playback window), changing the number of render threads from 4>2 and/or setting the dynamic RAM to 0MB helps some people. Check the Sony Vegas site/forums for more ideas. But bottom line is, even a 3 ghz processor doesn't guarranty good playback rates in Vegas.

If you have FX added, it'll slow down playback. Magic Bullet, perhaps?

All right first thank you two. I'm using a dvx it does a 2-3 pull down, and I've played it back with out any effects and it's in draft quaility and still slows down to 20 frames. I use to use veags movie maker (the little 100 dollar sony program) and it had no problem playing back 30fps progressive footage on the same computer so is there a way to maybe convert it to 24fps and not have to worry about vegas doing the 2-3 pull down. Thanks

There should be no issue with any pulldown; you should easily get full-frame playback at Best quality.
What else do you have running the background? Virus protection, etc.?

Yeah I do have an anti virus program, I don't use it because my computer isn't connected to the internet. I have a ton of like programs that I don't use that are in the registry, like aol and other garbage. Should I try to delete them. I don't know it confuses me because the task manager doesn't show the processor running at a very high percentage, when these drops occur.

i had some problem in Vegas 7, you may try to change the setting of Audio for preview to DirectX audio, in my case, it turns out much fast preview after this change
