Oh gee, I don't know

Maybe because the sun tends to cast a shadow in the direction it is facing ?

Just a hunch

It's because the camera isn't exposed to pick up these shadows.

If it was, everything would be blown out. There are shadows on the pants, the trees, etc

Joe, Your Not Filming In A Hollywood Studio And Cant Control All Of The Conditions Esp Where The Shadows Will Fall. If Nothing Else Position The Players Facing The Sun, That Should Help Some. The Frames Looked Pretty Decent To Me. If The Players Wernt Moving You Could Have Used A Reflector But In This Instance That Would Have Been Next To Impossible.

I wanna add that shoulder panning the camera infront of trees and woods (things with A LOT of fine detail...), probably is the worst task for a highly compressed medium like miniDV.
Thereīs so much changing information that the codec really is under full load, resulting in a kind of sh*tty picture...
Also for situations like this you might wanne use blackstretch (if i recall correctly) on the XL2 to record more detail in the shadows, any setting that compresses the shadows
eg for a certain kind of "film" look will only worsen the contrast problem...
For shooting sports playing with the shutter can also help and always check focus, even in SD...
Just learn and become better, no offence, but it isnīt the XLīs fault...
I was always amazed when Disjecta showed his miniDV originated nature films, but he only had slow movement if all in them...
