HD-D5 is Panasonic's premium video codec, the standard for mastering Hollywood feature films, and comparable to Sony's HDCAM-SR.

The HVX200 shoots DVCPRO-HD, which is Panasonic's professional-level HD codec and comparable to Sony's HDCAM.

how far below D5 would the DVX200 be if you were to compare the 2 codecs?

Can we get this in a firmware upgrade?

D5 requires an external deck and the ability of your hvx to output uncompressed HD. You can do this with the JVC 200 series, the Canon and most pro camcorders with an SDI out (Varicam). Not sure if the DVI to component connection on HVX outputs uncompressed analog. Barry? Even if it did, it's such an ass backward, lousy, unreliable piece of &&(*&() connection, I would never count on it to capture footage with.

What we do often is shoot DVC PRO HD (HVX's code). Offline on FCP or AVID. Upconvert the offline via Kona Card to uncompressed 8 or 10 bit and color correct in that space. DVC Pro HD was never designed to be a finishing codec. It gets noisy real fast. After online we output a Master to D5 or HD Cam SR and make our dubs via hardware (terranax or wilcox) to whatever our deliverable is.

It costs a bit more, but there are deals to be had. At the end of the day you end up with a very clean broadcast master. Can't tell you how many SD downconversions from the HVX look worst than DVX footage. Many broadcasters still live in an SD world , so until then.....

I didn't think there was a panasonic camera that shot D5? So the answer is no it does not because no camera does. But I can master the footage to D5 when we are done with the project and give you a D5 master.
Or say this it shoots DVCPROHD which is Panasonics professional shooting codec and I can master to D5 which is Panasonics Professional Mastering codec.

You're comparing a lot more than just a codec, you're comparing a $6,000 camcorder to a $75,000 deck.

HD-D5 quality has never been available in a camcorder before. The only way (currently) to get that level of quality would be with a $250,000 Sony F23 (its HDCAM-SR codec is comparable to HD-D5).

Soon that level of quality will be available in a lower-cost option, with AVC-Intra. It's a $4,000 add-in board, but it's available only for the $27,000 HPX2000/HPX2100 (or, built-in to the $48,000 HPX3000).

Not possible as a firmware upgrade.

So what you are saying is that I can not compete with D5 using my HVX-200.
Do I understand that correctly? If that is the case what can I do with what I have to not loose the job my potential client is asking for?

Do they need the project delivered in D5 or shot on D5?
