... All Hallow's Eve is another name for Halloween, and yes, the films will be shown Halloween weekend. So that should give some idea of how to interpret the theme of darkness. I was just discussing the fest with my 11 year old daughter and I think she summed it up nicely--"The films should creep you out".

Your film should evoke a feeling of something dark, but they don't require zombies, monsters or serials killers--not that there's anything wrong with that. :) A film like Eraserhead takes you to a very dark place. Brazil, a black comedy, is thematically dark. So for this fest we have a unifying tone to the films, rather than a specific genre.

So I wanna do the "Who's In" Thread, for once, for
 All Hallows Fest

Note the Halloween fest around here IS in fact cursed or that's the rumor at least. So ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK.
The curse even got some coverage in the Hollywood Reporter:
" ... For the past several years a filmmaking website has sponsored an
annual film festival in October to coincide with Halloween. Each year
the event has been marred by death, dismemberment or acts of violence to
the point that many in the industry believe the festival is cursed or
haunted in some manner.

To the dismay of organizers who hoped to put the rumors of a curse to
rest this year, things are off to an ominous start with the discovery of ...."

But OK, your names have been added ... there is no turning back ...

I watched "into the darkness" last year so I know what to watch out for: swinging by myself in a deserted playground, runaway soccar balls, seemingly harmless rocks...etc

So I should be alright.

So are we all gearing up to do thrillers and chillers? It wasn't really spec'd that way, but with the way it looks, maybe should they make that somewhat of a requirement?

I mean, if somebody shoots a family melodrama about centering around a child who is blind, which would work within the theme of "darkness", how is that going to compete with what appears most people are going to be doing?

Or am I missing something here? Just wondering what everybody else thinks.

Well I am not intending on doing a thriller/chiller.

I was thinking of doing something a little more fun. Still working ideas out with people. I think I'll start having production meetings in the next couple weeks. But I am totally leaning musical now. haha, I've always wanted to do one. So I am liking this open genre with darkness as a theme. It leaves it open to interpretation. Which is best for the creative side of things.

John, I think that you are putting WAY TOO MUCH THOUGHT into this! :)

You do think outside of the box... I'll give you that. BUT, I for one am going to go for the spirit of fest. It is called "All Hallows Fest" and it does appear to have a viewing date of Oct. 31! Call me crazy but I am going for the thrillers and chillers and leaving the blind kid in the dark!

Ha! Well, that's why I was asking about this, because it could potentially create one of those wonderful "situations".

Take "All Hallows Fest", the poster Barry put up, Jack's "Book of Names", etc., include the "darkness" theme, and it really does seem like an atmosphere of terror to me.

So if we get a bunch of decent "Zombies Do Napa" films and then somebody creates an exceptional film that's a "heartfelt drama about a little boy who's afraid of the dark and how his vineyard-owning grandpa helps him through it by introducing him to stargazing", I mean, come on, it's going to be literally a SLAUGHTER! :zombie_smiley:

I'm all for open fests, but I think because of the timing and the skewed promotions, the jury's all ready been "compromised".

Just my two cents, as always. :)

I doubt we've ever had a more open fest than this one. You could do High School Musical 3 with this fest -- as long as it somehow fits a theme of "darkness" and features a glass of red wine prominently in at least one scene.

What does a theme of "darkness" mean? Could it mean that you do a film about "Chocolate Rain"? I mean, rain of chocolate would be pretty dark and would turn everything dark, right? :D

Barry_S should clarify what would or wouldn't fall under the theme of "darkness"; if you have questions over whether your proposed film would fit, definitely send him a PM.

Kholi
08-18-2007, 06:25 PM
NOOOO Not Chocolate Rain!

Yeah, Barry should clarify. Although it's very open, maybe too open and it's already confusing the natives.

Halloween isn't all about horror... come on peeeeps.

You bring up a very valid point.... I was just ribbing you.

I don't have a clue of what I am going to do yet but I have a feeling that it is going to be something light (with a bit of a fright!).

I really wouldn't worry about any judging or comparing of films and genres. Just make the best film you can and make it so it stands on it's own merits.

Barry, in all fairness, High School Musical 3 was originally slated as Haunted High School Musical. Though that idea was recently dropped. So technically, the original slate of HSM3 would qualify as darkness. :D

I'm glad Barry Green brought up Chocolate Rain, because a very very evil part of me wanted to do ChocolateRainFest. This is not that fest.

Jack Daniel Stanley
08-18-2007, 08:28 PM
I think "Check"from Spy Fest would also be a great example of a cross genre or not easily "genre-fied" film that "creeps you out."

Oh, I know.

I agree. These fests are always catalysts to get off your ass and do something. I never go into it expecting to win anything. But it is, after all, a "contest" too, so I just want to clarify things is all.

I think a lot of people will do "creepy" stuff. Because of the theme and the timing of the fest, I already have a short list of what I expect to see from half of everyone; "power outage" is probably one event we'll see a few of. But I hope people really do think outside the box on this, even if they're doing CREEPY. I'd really hate to see umpteen zombie shorts and a bunch of warmed over Eli Roth flicks.

Well, enough of the small talk, let's go make some films, damn it!

Barry_Green
08-18-2007, 09:23 PM
But it is, after all, a "contest" too, so I just want to clarify things is all.

Maybe, maybe not. We may or may not have prizes, that depends on whether sponsors step forward, and also on whether the fest mods decide they want to promote it as a contest. At its base level it should not be viewed as a "contest". It's a user participation festival. There may not be any prizes at all, and if there aren't any, there should be no complaining -- just because we usually have offered prizes (sometimes big ones) is no indication that we will be able to or even want to continue offering them. That's a decision for the fest mods to decide.

What I'm saying is: maybe there'll be a contest, maybe not, but don't approach it as a contest. Approach it as a festival, where you show off your best work. There will be a winner, so in that sense you could say it's a contest, but that doesn't necessarily equate to prizes...

I'd like to be in on this one. I have another horror-type short I'm doing for another contest right now. Shooting next week. I'll see if I have time to come up with another idea. I'll have to check with my manager, publicist, and agent on this one, Mark. I have to have my own trailer which has a layout ratio of 2:3 (width:length). I have to have my own personal craft services table. You'll have to sign a waver that clearly states that you, nor anyone involved, is legally responsible for any "accidental" incidents which may occur over said craft services table. I require 12% of the gross profits of the film. This includes both front-end as well as back-end profits..........

Tommy proudly wears that shirt and puffs his chest out while pointing to it as he approaches others. The behavior is charmingly similar to the display antics of Mandrills as a graphic depiction of Hollywood caste boundaries (i.e., "I'm an actor. Use me as you wish."

With respect to who I am in the illustration, I am the aging silverback sitting in the background with a whip being firmly applied to Hyten as I shout, "k'uh-p'i chu-se-yo (http://learnkorean.com/sound/phrases/givmecoffee.rm), you indolent slacker."

why isnt my name in the list???

The Book of Names rejected you at first. You must have done something nice for someone recently, or just gone to confession, or done whatever your faith of choice does to cleanse and fortify oneself against the inherent wickedness of man on which the book feeds.

But, in keeping with your wishes, I was intent on placing your mortal soul in danger along with the others ... so I kept re-submitting you until it was eventually accepted into the book. You must have sullied your temporary innocence and fortification against evil (several times over for that matter) for the quill's nib burned red as I inscribed your name in the hallowed leaves leaving the pungent aroma of sulfur in the air.

Now I can't help but feeling a bit guilty for repeatedly trying to write your name in the book until it was accepted. Maybe I should have left well enough alone, for such a reaction is truly rare and surely means your particular suffering will be unparalleled even amongst the damned.

Fare the well 'o lost soul.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v635/DavesWorld56/HalloweenGifs/EnterAtOwnRisk.gif

When the curse targets a production or individual entered in the fest, the best case scenarios involve food poisoning, broken gear and last minute drop outs of cast and crew. Also many who sign up seem unable to actually complete their films.

I believe Mark Johnson has been compiling newspaper clippings and articles related to the DVXuser Halloween Fest curse. Maybe he can post a couple for us?

Yes Mark you may have gone too far posting Ms. Sperling's slanted and error filled article. I never thought you would take my request seriously to post some of your research. I was just trying to scare people off for their own good.

As far as the curse, we are trying to let bygones be bygones. And besides it is not wholly accurate. The police did not find seven severed hands in my home. It was six hands and one foot. Let's at least be accurate. And I swear 7 hands or 6 + 1 foot, I still have no idea how they got there.

Maybe if we don't talk about the curse so much we might get through a fest with a zero mortality rate for once. I think it is kind of a thing that feeds on itself. But since you let the cat out of the bag for this year there's no unringing that bell or unmixing this metaphor.

.... But this year's blood be on your head Johnson.

.... This year's blood be on your head.

Yore sanguine declamations chill me to the bone, Herr Stanley. Keep ye limbs about ye and speak not of the ghostly nor ghastly acts from beyond the pale lest ye be tossed to the beyond yeself. I, for one, stand pallid yet firmly planted in the face of the denizens that plague our waking hours. I shall cast more than demons out of this bottle of spirits, my friend.

You guys are crazy!

But the article did remind me...Jack I rented Deja Vu last week and was pleasantly surprised to see your scene in it. I had forgotten that you were in it (and I didn't recognize you...you look different than in Bone Hand) but I remembered your line from previous posts when the film first came out.

That was cool!

...anyway, I'll stop hi-jacking this thread, and write something relevant...I've got a story finally, and a title for this entry: "What Goes Around..." Can you add that to my name on the list please :)

And to add fuel to the fire..."I don't believe in curses...I'll be right back...let me go investigate that strange noise outside...we should definitely split up and look for the killer...what's the worst that could happen?"

Did I miss any famous last words?

I think maybe only taunting the killer in disbelief. "Oh I'm sooo sure. Like there's really a killer. Come on Mr. Killer man if your so big and tough show your-" as sound of machete whips through the air and kerthunks in neck.

Well young padawan ... :)

That's from the the Pre Heavenly Creatures / Frightner's / LOTR Peter Jackson's "Dead Alive" NZ title "Brain Dead".

It's a true Gem.

Some tonal similarity to Evil Dead 2. 7,000 X's the gore. But cartoony enough to not be Gorno, like Hostel, yet just real enough to be disturbing.

I highly recommend these pre-famous or lesser known Jackson gems.
Meet the Feebles (http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Meet_the_Feebles/60022870)
Dead Alive (http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Dead_Alive/425791)
Forgotten Silver (http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Forgotten_Silver/70000792) (maybe the most obscure)
the list would not be complete without
Bad Taste (http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Bad_Taste/60024208)
though that one I can take or leave.
the other's are flat out brilliant

Somewhere in between the above and the American movies in terms of notoriety is
Heavenly Creatures (http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Heavenly_Creatures/60011627)
also brill.

Forgotten Silver is the only one I havnt seen.

I dig them all...but Meet the Feebles and Bad taste are something special.
Meet the Feebles because it has coked up muppet knife throwing and nam
flashbacks...and Bad Taste because its a whole movie of Peter Jackson acting.

......

you guys have to add Forgotton Silver to the NetFlix cue.

Peter Jackson discovers that his elderly neighbor is the widow of Colin MacKenzie, a fellow Kiwi and undoubtedly cinema's most unsung auteur. Despite pioneering film effects like
SOUND (before hollywood),
and
COLOR (before hollywood),
and tracking shots (before hollywood),
and even achieveing flight a few days before the Wright brothers,
his monumental bad luck rendered him completely forgotten.

Jackson takes it upon himself to discover the set of his biblical epic Salome, and see that this forgotten genius is given his rightful kudos. He is basically set up as being greater than Orson Welles and doing everything Orson did first and better.

When the doc aired in New Zealand, much like the reaction to Orson Welles's War of the Worlds which people took as real, people were writing in to the television station, to the editorial section of newspapers and calling in to talk shows saying that they were shocked and angry that such a New Zealand National treasure had been hidden from the world for so long.

Hilarious stuff largely because it is presented so straight.

Jared Meyer
09-15-2007, 12:35 PM
Great movie. Someone tried to present it to me as a straight documentary, but I was fooled only for about the first ten minutes.

When an adolescent Mackenzie is described as orchestrating a massive theft of hundreds of chicken eggs from the surrounding farms to be able to make motion picture film from the yolks, I burst out laughing and the illusion was gone...Incredibly clever movie though. Peter Jackson is too cool for school.

Fun fact - Nancy Schreiber was DP on the film. EDIT - well, one of the credited DP's...she's listed as Camera Op and DP: Additional Photography

After you watch the movie, you should google it to see what the popular opinions were at the time, upon release and after the hoax was revealed. The New Zealand paper headlines in particular are the funniest. The citizenry really wanted to believe that they had unearthed their country's very own historical cinema wunderkind...

I would like to create a poster and banner for the fest, but could not find any threads in my search re. size of artwork, how to upload, etc... I am new to all of this, so I apologize in advance for all the stupid questions I will invariably be asking=).

BTW, my film is called, "The Farmer".

maximus,

you're banner should be no bigger than 569x70 i believe.
you can upload jpegs and stuff to dvxuser's own server by using the "media upload center" link in the top center of the page. Each user gets 10 mb. To change your signature (where people put banners), go to "user CP" (top left) and click on "edit siganture"

PM me if you need any more help.

Hybridtheory,

Thank you for your quick response. One of the reasons I've finally entered a dvxuser fest, is to force myself to learn various softwares, and tech stuff that I've wanted to learn for ages, but put off learning for various reasons (too busy, too tired, too lazy...) This fest is the kick in the pants I needed! I'm struggling with Photoshop at the moment, but enjoying the challenge. When it is time to upload, I will probably take you up on your kind offer of assistance.
