I wanted to do some experimental filming with the HVX and 20 FPS because SpeedEdit has a 20FPS timeline, however, after setting the HVX at 720PN and 20 FPS it was evident that it was recording no audio, my bars were not moving with testing sounds till I put the framerate back to 24FPS..

My plan was origionally to simulate an old film camera, but how can you with no sound?

Any imput would be appreciated..

No sound is recorded to the HVX when using variable frame rates. You would need to record sound independently and then sync it in post.

also, old cameras had no sound anyway.... ;)

rather than PN, you could shoot 60P at 20fps, and then you'd get sound recorded.

Right -- when overcranking or undercranking in pN mode, no sound gets recorded. When overcranking or undercranking in the regular 720P mode, sound does get recorded.

So I can do what I wanted? Set the camera to 720P and 20FPS, is there a pull-down to worry about?

Thanks!

Yes. Sixty frames per second are recorded, so the extra frames will have to be removed.

... but, keep in mind, the footage plays back in realtime. So you'd have to strip out duplicate frames (using Apple's FRC, or Raylight) to get the over/undercrank effect.

And keep in mind that doing the frame stripping in FCP throws away the sound too, whereas Cinema Tools preserves it. So if doing so in FCP, make sure you've extracted the sound file, or exported as aif or whatever, before you do the conversion.

Otherwise you sit there 'sick as a parrot, john', wondering what to do next. Unless you'v got the MXF's backed up of course.

Well i would just import it twice, pull audio form one, and pull image from another.

No biggie.

What is the procedure in a Windows environment? I have Premiere Pro 1.5 & 2.0, and Cineform Aspect HD? Can it be done in Windows?

No biggie, just making you aware of the fine print on a Mac.
