View Full Version : Best film of the 70's
I've just watched a documentary on 70's filmmaking " A Decade Under the Influence". It reinforced what a great and innovative time it was for filmmaking. Probably THE best decade.
I was wondering what you guys thought was the best film of this period. I would say Godfather 2 but I have a real soft spot for Jaws.

There's two ways to look at this question. We could give an answer based on our current knowledge of filmmaking, looking back at the films created during that period (Taxi Driver, Godfather, etc.) or we could give an answer based on which films we enjoyed the most as children during the 70's (Jaws, Star Wars, etc.).
As a child I really liked the movie Grease. And would sing "Go grease lightning...." all the time. But, as an adult, my synicalness doesn't allow me to enjoy the film at all. Well, except for when Olivia Newton John dances at the end. lol
As far as which film had the biggest and longest lasting impact (on almost everything), it would probably be Star Wars (1977). Whether you liked the film or not you can't deny the impact its had.

Just curious. Are you from Europe? Duel (the one Spielberg directed, yes?) was a made for TV movie here in North America, but was released in theatres in Europe and ended up being pretty popular.

You are probably right about Part 2, but off the top of my head, I have a soft spot for The French Connection. The gritty streets of New York were to that film what the desert sands were to Lawrence of Arabia.
Another poster mentioned something about perspective and how we saw these films as kids. I agree, but I think some of the other posters may have been adults in the seventies, so be prepared for Saturday Night Fever (which was not a bad film) to make an appearance. It was the Star Wars of disco.

I don't understand why people prefer Godfather Part Two to Part One. I just don't see how it's better than part one. Part one is storytelling perfection. Part Two is brilliant, but slightly bloated, and my interest in the story always starts to wane a bit in the second half. It's almost as good for me, but not superior to the first.
I also think The Conversation is a masterclass of so many aspects of film.
