Has anyone ever successfully built a homemade hard drive recorder similar to the firestore fs-100? $2000 bucks is a bit excessive for 100gigs.
I'd be willing to try it if someone could fill me in on some of its features/details.

You'd have to have a custom controller for it. An off-the-shelf firewire hard drive has its firewire interface set up for asynchronous mode communication. The camera uses isochronous mode. I'm sure there are other issues, but that alone is enough to make this non-trivial.

Not sure about a DIY drive, but I have seen people replace the harddrive with something like a 320GB drive. I can't remember it exactly, but that's just my two euro cents.

people do that with Tivo drives, with no problems. You just clone the pre-installed software to the next drive. I'm assuming there are more differences between the fs-4 and the fs-100 other than disk space, otherwise everyone would do this.... correct?
