Is there a certain codec that I need to download to be able to view HD footage in Quicktime on my Mac?
yeah. you need an app that is dvcrpoHD friendly. raylight, final cut pro, or any of the packages from imagine products... you cant just view clips from the hvx in quicktime...

At that very least, FCP 5.x must be installed to install the DVCProHD codecs

Cool. That would explain why it worked perfect on my machine but not my bosses. I will have to install one of these programs on his computer.
Is there a cheaper way?

No there isn't, nor can you install FCP on a computer not owned by you.
sure you can. as long as its only running on one machine at a time.

Perhaps you are right about the ownership. But it must be removed from all other machines before it is installed.
FCP 5.x permits one install. You need to remove the other.
