View Full Version : A1 slo mo

Whilst I didnt have any slo mo on hand, I wanted to produce a clip that shows the A1 slo mo via FCP is every bit as good as any prosumer cam on the market. No twixtor or the like. I decided however that this would better serve A1 and FCS2 users as an example and a bit on the process.
First, shot 1080/60i with 1/120th shutter speed.
Second, clip capture as standard.
Third, bring in to a 29.97 timeline.
Fourth, export in compressor a 59.97 progressive frames per second. Changing all frame controls to best settings.
Fifth, import into a 24fps timeline and set speed to 40% and done.
Clip is small just 1.8mb. It's a boring clip, nothing else to shoot so I am sorry about my vacuum cleaner and - I just realised, my big ugly feet.
Anyway nothing but clean perfect slow motion duh - http://www.scarlet-films.com/randoms/a1slo.mov
P.S. if youre wondering about the floor, its a fake wood grain thats padded. Its great for wood floor rooms that give crap ass audio reverb. I take it many places.

Muha,
do little children scream "Godzilla!" when you walk the streets in Tokyo ?
Couldnīt resist, sorry...
The slo-mo looks good, never needed the HVXs so far so I canīt compare, but it doesnīt look fake like the ones from simple TV programms (news aso)...

Nice. Gotta love PAL though.
1. capture 1080/50i footage.
2. Bring in to 25fps timeline.
3. stretch footage to 200%
Thanks for the great tip!
I can't wait to try it outside.

Want to add - I didnt include a streaming header so just let it load (all of 1.8mb) and then play.

Good post, ncje. I've had some great results shooting 1080i for slo mo too. The optical flow technology in Compressor (inherited from Shake) is really incredible.

NCJE, Great tip. I have Premiere 2.0. What would you sub for compressor?

Agreed Elton. Compressor has been improved upon in many ways.

Sorry Milvid I havent used premier pro for a long time and I have never used 2.0, maybe check the premier forum for that.

Hi all - long time reader - first time poster
-Random slo mo tip for final cut users-
This may sound quite simplistic but i have had some success with slo mo in final Cut (havent installed FCS2 yet - although i have had the box for 2 months - just finishing a big project)
by doing a few tweaks- slowing down standard DV clip and then double clicking to bring up the viewer - put motion blur to zero and render. You can get speeds down to 20% with pretty reasonable results - and its a quick workflow - no jumping in and out of diferent settings / timelines.
Caveates-I down convert from HDV to DV at capture ( to keep render times quick) as i am still delivering in SD (DVD, web) - pictures are still plenty pretty as i am shooting in clear sunlight with blue water, reflections white spray etc.- good light and colors lets me get away with alot of basic camera gear.
This is HC3 footage at auto settings (mostly water housing windsurf and kitesurf footage)
I work in pal
I posted this one on the apple forum and quite a few people were surprised and perplexed by the good results. This may or may not continue to work in FCS2 - hopefully it saves some readers the headaches i went through to get acceptable slo mo in final cut.

Oh my god...that pinky toe...did you see that...
Sorry...er...umm...
Thanks. I'm debating over the AHA1 (less expensive) and the HVX.
Is there a similar workflow for 24fps?

Okay, I'm an idiot.
I've got the A1 and shot some footage at 1080/60i with a 120 and even a 250 shutter speed.
So, I imported it into an HDV 1080/60i timeline.
Now what?
I used the de-interlace tool in the filters of FCP to deinterlace it, but what format do I export it to???
There is no HDV 1080/60p in my version of FCP, which is 5.1.4. BTW, I have FCS so I pocess Compressor, if that helps.
I understand I'm suppose to have a 1080/60p image that I import into a 1080/24p timeline and slow it down 40%.
What the hell am I doing wrong???

Yeah I played Australian football for a long time. It has been broken too many times to count. God gave me other attributes in return thankfully.

Elton the fringing on that fence shot is horrible. One of the things I fear in considering an A1 purchase.

There's no doubt, CA is plenty obvious here and there. On that shot I was fairly wide open, so I'm sure that exacerbated the problem some. Btw, that's a shot with the 6x WA lens for the XL-H1.
I can understand your concerns, but my thoughts are simple on the subject: if you're looking for CA-free performance, especially in the entry-level HD category, you'll be sorely disappointed. All have the issue, to greater or lesser degrees. (Canon and JVC probably have it the worst)
I'll partially quote Timur from another thread to close things out here--"...but if a little chroma abberation is ruining your movie, youve got bigger problems than a crappy lens...."

Hopefully those "attributes" won't make it into future clips on here.

Hello All,
I get how to shoot this in camera. But I am struggling with the best way to do this in Final Cut Pro 5.1.4?
Anyone willing to share a recipe for this? I am shooting the bulk of my project in 24f and want to be able to use the slowmotion on that timeline.
I think the info earlier the thread requires the most recent version of FCP? Correct? I look forward to any help out there.
Thanks,
Scott

For slow motion I shoot a mixture of 24F and 60i. It's a pain to switch between tapes and change the framerate every time but 60i has always yields great result when deinterlaced to 60p or for time remapping. I used AE though so not sure about FCP.

I see this particular thread has a lot of views over the last few months. Anyone willing to post a step by step for FCP 5.1.4?

You get a good feel for the slo motion when you walk towards the camera - cool effect. What if you wanted to make the footage slower/faster? Also this seems like a long process to get that effect... there's gotta be an easier way!

As far as capturing 24F and 60i in FCP, you don't actually have to stop and change the capture settings. 24F capture will also capture 60i without altering the footage. It's very easy to check clip info in the browser/bin after a capture session to see what clips are what.

It isnt too bad. I mean how much do you shoot for slow motion?
And someone asked so heres my reply. Yes, the original post was made regarding FCP v6.
For Premier users. It would be best to shoot in 30f, as you lose quite a bit of resolution when going from 60i to 24p.
Just shoot 30f, import into premier pro, interpret footage as 23.976 fps. import the footage and bam, you haev great slow mo.
You can also do the 60i version, if you don't mind the drop in resolution.

Ive heard of people using jes-deinterlacer to convert the footage to 60p, then in cinematools conforming the footage to 24p in 40% slowmo. I've never tried it though

It's easier than you think in After Effects. Follow this link (http://rarevision.com/v1/articles/slow_motion.php)to a RareVision tutorial that's easy to follow once you get he hang of it. Really nice 60i footage slowed down. Can even be done with a cheap old cam, if you're not needing HD.
After Effects CS4 also has some kind of new algorithm that reportedly gives awesome time remapping.

I think he was comparing you to Godzilla because of the angle and the feeling of scale that slomo gives things, plus the fact that you are in Tokyo. Not because of the appearance of your feet
Which are fairly average guy feet as far as I can tell.
