I'm shooting a no-budget music video in Hamilton, ON on December 9 and am looking for a volunteer to help with cabling, playback, and some miscellaneous camera department support. If you live in Toronto, you could easily take the GO train or bus to Hamilton - the set is near the station.
This should actually be a pretty interesting shoot. We are using the DVX with a Hollywood Lite Steadicam rig and wireless video transmission for monitoring by the director. Our plan is to shoot the video in 1-shot - no cuts - but with many orchestrated moves between two sets.
The day will basically involve lots of rehearsal, and then we will wrap as soon as we get a perfect take. Sounds easy right? ;)
There's no pay, but there will be catering! :o
The band is Spin Dizzy and the song is "GO."

great. Send me an email with your contact info and I'll have you added to the call sheet. I'm not sure of the call time yet, but the AD or PM will contact you a day or two before the shoot with info.

deffered pay is a joke.. .Its pretty much a write off.. I only know 2 people that actually ever recieved it.
But food... I dont care how big the production is it is always one of the best things to hear is that Aby call right before lunch.

Yes. Deferred pay is the classic car sales pitch! BUt, when they cater right, it's more than worth it.
Just make sure I have an assload of coffee and cigarettes and I'm good.

Deferrals - hmmmm - sounds like an indie I worked on a couple of years ago. I don't regret working on it - being a DOP on a low budget was a great experience. The points looked good on paper too.
What didn't work was the writer/producer/director decided to be the editor too (sigh :'( ). 'Twas his first attempt in all positions. The premiere made me shudder :-/. Reaction shots held wayyyy too long, choppy story flow, and (ugh!) sound/ambient levels that would make a grown man cry :'(.
I cringed looking at it. I actually walked out to compose myself with a scotch. If I ever felt the need to turn alcoholic, that was the night. ???
Much to my delight, no one criticized my camera skills (phew!).
BTW - when you get involved with a project where the writer/producer/director/editor tells you they don't have an ego, have a great concept before the next film is even shot, and that it'll turn into a major money-maker because, well, the project is that good - run, don't walk in the other direction.
I didn't have high expectations of ROI. The cast was great to work with. The crew was me, so I won't complain too much about that, hehe.
On the other hand, it does give you an opportunity to use gear other people have paid for - and the quality shots just add to the demo reel.

I have backend points on 3 feature films... but the producers never seem to have enough $$$ left over to actually send the film to market and sell it. 5% or 000,000.00 is still 0!
And how many times have you heard "I just want to get the film in the can... we'll deal with post later!"
Of course my favourite is "can't the editor just do the final mix on the Avid?"
Now I only ever do "free" jobs for my closest friends and collaborators - because they'd do the same for me.

Deal with it in post is a phrase of the ill-prepared. The trend in HD especially is to have post on set to communicate why it should be done right the first time. Of course, it doesn't make it any easier when you ARE post. Then again, time is money - pay me now, or pay for it later.
True friends you can never have enough of :)
