Hi !
I'm 22 and this is a fake commercial for the Sony PSP I shot with the HVX200.
(it's not a real commercial by Sony. I made it with some friends with my own money )
It was shot on DVCPRO50 which was great for the keying !

better quality on my website

thanks everyone ;) the process was very long for those 2 minutes. It took me 9 months ( we were only 2 and self-taugh). it should have been shorter.
I would like to do a making of. maybe someday ?
thanks again.

this was hot! what programs did you use for keying? how did you get the wings on the angel and demon? was it drawn and then animated or what?
FrancoisDescraques
08-12-2007, 11:10 AM
the wings were modelized ( is that english ? ) with Cinema4d by my friend then I lighted them and animated . Then they were composited (is that english too ?) with after effetcs. The keyings was done by KEYLIGHT, a pluging for After Effetcs.

wow is so RIGHT. Man, I thought that was really great and thanks for the FX shot too. Amazing how it looks in the raw original and yet how much you can do with some CC and talent.
I think Sony would freak on this, but protect yourself so they don't steal your idea. Really wonderful piece here and something that I know I don't have any skill in completing.
Could you discuss your workflow and how you decided what to do?
SIMPLY AWESOME.. and finally, what did you do this for?
FrancoisDescraques
08-13-2007, 02:31 AM
Thanks everyone. So I shot this in order to show what i can do to commercial companies (we'll se what they say) . But I really wanted to make something fun to watch by everyone.
Every building near the camera is CG but the background are still pictures. DVCPRO50 was the key choice for the keying and it was my first use of the HVX200. Some shots are in 720p 50p for the slow motions but they can be hardly seen. We didn't do the whole movie in HD because it would have been twice longer to make the FX.
thanks again !!!!

Beautiful work! I can see why it would take that long (9 months) to make this. Thanks for sharing the green screen shots before edit. It's good to see how it's cut before it becomes seamless.
I do have one question. Where'd you get the green screen cloth. That was nice and big.
FrancoisDescraques

I ordered the greenscreen from eefx.com. it is indeed nice and big ;)

Amazing job!
All done in your garage? Perfect, one day journalists can write: before becoming a billion dollar company, Francois was working out of his gararge - they love anecdotes like this :D
I also second a making of, or at least tell us a little more about your workflow and how you spent these 9 month (did you have time to eat, did you have to sell your kidneys...?)
If a production company turns you down after they saw this, post it here and we´ll all send them emails making fun of their hairstyles and taste of fine wine :costumed-smiley-047!
Ca été très bien! Absolument incroyable!

With that kind of work, I'd be sending that stuff to more than just Sony. Send it to ILM, Digital Domain, The Orphanage, etc. This will catch their interest.
For example, if the guys who made Ryan vs. Dorkman are now working at ILM, you guys definitely have a chance of getting into the American film industry.

Wow, I am really impressed. I think the vision before you shot it - knowing exactly what you wanted - is the real deal here.
Out of curiosity, where did you shoot? That space looks big - a garage? Also, which lights did you use?
FrancoisDescraques
08-15-2007, 02:11 AM
thanks again for your compliments. It gives me the courage to show it without fear ;)
DavidD, the garage was not that big because it was a half inside, half outside garage so the crew and light was outside , in the backyard wherease the actors was under the roof. And it was noovember by night in Paris , so it was very cold ! We used kinoflo to light the green screen and 3 800w spots to lights the actors.
Spartacus, your comment is so funny I read it to all my crew.

Hey cool deal ya got going on here. Anime Inspired? Seen DEVILMAN, by chance?
I like the direction it's going, very current. You pulled off what you were trying to accomplish very well! Congrats!
I think it's pretty darned cool as it is, wondering if you cut it down to 15 or 30 seconds to get to the punchline if it would have a more polished impact?
I've always wondered how you might go about setting up these kinds of shots for keying. I really like how you managed to add your tracking markers for wings right on the actors without hindering them at all. And THEN simplified by reducing the number of trackers; very smart.
Looking forward to seeing more work from you.

That was great, with this kind of demo, looks like you could have a long and successful career in commercials, selling people's products for them.. What about features? Any intentions in that area? You are French, so I'd expect you to have some aspirations in that area also...

kholi, i am a huge anime fan but i only saw devilman halfway through post production. i though of doing a 30s version but for now, i can't see how. But i'll find a way when i'll update my demo reel in september.
dailyrushes, of course i have intentions in features but i got a lot of things to learn first and commercial ( and other tv stuffs) seem appropriate for me now. because right now, i just want to work ;)

I can only add to all the other raves that I thought the physical acting was superb by all three of the actors and that the editing was exceptional. This is a really outstanding effort. Hats off...

dvcpro50 is the hvx's SD format (SD predecessor to dvcprohd. It is better than DV for SD video.

I'd say to post it on youtube or something else first to get it to go viral. Have it hyped up and get a ton of views and then they will notice it. Got to get the "hand" as they say and have them come looking for you. Otherwise you might not get what it deserves. I don't know if spec spots are well received or not, but having a ton of support and views might not be a bad way to go first.. and if that doesn't work you could go through the front door. I know that they can be squirrelly though because you are dealing more with the advertising companies than the company directly, in this case Sony.

Thanks for the advises !
I've put it on youtube, dailymotions and even Ifilm but I lack some "publicity" to attract viewers. What kind of websites I should contact to your mind ? (dvxuser is the one that made the most people see my movie so far. Thanks again !)

I know it's been awhile since you've been here, but i just arrived and was blown away by your work. You asked how to create buzz. Simply put, begin posting everywhere you can and continue to provide a link to the YouTube version. By posting, I mean write little commentaries on other topics on forums like this. Then repeat. And repeat. And sooner rather than later, you will be noticed. There is no way you cannot be. You are a huge talent.

Hi Francois, great commercial mate - bloody brilliant.
To get maximum exposure for your video, I would do as some have advised above, get it on youtube along with facebook and myspace (the main 3) and then have a bunch of mates/associates social bookmark your videos across the 3 platforms on a semi-regular basis.
A few top social bookmarking sites are:

I've used this marketing technique for some videos I've done in the past with great effect.
Well done again on the PSP ad - you deserve some accolade for your efforts - don't give up!
