View Full Version : Life expectancy of the HVX 200

I realize that today's technology is "outdated" by tomorrow, but, in terms of the product lifecycle, does the HVX 200 represent a good investment? I am not up on all things Panny and what I don't want to do is make a purchase only to have the "next thing" come out later this year...if I am that close to the end of the lifecycle, I would simply just wait.
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

Get it. It has a long life to live.

The DVX is still used by many, and still sells for a pretty penny. I don't think the HVX is going anywhere anytime soon.
Also, the "next thing" already came out, the HPX500 which is a beefy HVX200, but at its price tag, its not gonna hurt the HVX's life span. And if you are referring to a B version of the HVX, people have confirmed on this forum that there are no plans, as of yet, for a B version..... (anyone, feel free to correct me if this has changed)

Professional equipment almost always has a *much* slower replacement cycle than consumer gear, mainly because 'Joe Sixpack' doesn't buy pro gear. While manufacturers will sell a zillion $500 DV camcorders (or cheap laptops or DVD players), Panasonic will sell a tiny fraction of that number of HVXs, and the HVXs cost a lot more to make. So they *need* to slow down the replacement cycle as they gradually recoup their investment. Basically, worry not...

I see 2-3 years before they become crash cameras...... :)
you might look at the "RED" camera if you have deeper pockets...

Awesome. Thanks for the replies guys. BTW, I would love a Red, but I am basically a hobbyist. The Red would be just a little difficult to justify to my wife... :D
Thanks again,
Matt
