Ok, lastnight I saw that Miss Potter movie about Beatrix Potter who wrote and illustrated the Peter Rabbit stories and whatnot. It was a semi-interesting film, but I was surprised by a glaring mistake on the DVD cover: Ewan McGregor is on the cover, clean-shaven, yet in the film itself, his entire role, he always has a huge moustache on. I also recall seeing several Pulp Fiction posters in various places with Samuel L. Jackson in very short hair, yet in the film, he has a huge afro. So, my question is, what covers get on your nerves and why do you think this happens?

They don't get on my nerves, but I've seen a few like that. Check the cover/poster of "Chasing Amy."

Probably, the publicity photos were taken at a time when the actor(s) had other commitments which required a different look.

I have seen that one, too.

I thought about that, but couldn't they at least stick a fake moustache or wig on them? I guess I'm picky about this sort of thing. :)

Infernal Affairs. That's one terrible cover. The original HK one is a lot better...

They just didn't want people to take notice of how brilliant that movie was, in order for the "remake" to have Oscar chances...

These things are most likely deliberate marketing decisions...They probably thought Ewan looked more "handsome" without the mustache and wanted to make it look more like a contemporary rom-com. They also probably thought Sam Jackson looked "hipper" without the giant, greasy 70's fro. I knew someone who made a movie called Freak Talks About Sex, and one distributor changed the title to Blowin' Smoke, and put a hot chick on the poster who wasn't even in the movie.
