I just bought a new firestore FS100 with updated 3.0 software. It says I only get 111 minutes. It doesn't make sense. If you have a 100 gig drive, that should be equivelant to 12 -8 gig P2 cards. At 20 minutes per P2 cards that would be 240 minutes. It reads 111 minutes whether I am set to Quicktime Native or P2 native. Does anyone if this is a problem or if I only get 111 minutes at HD? That would be lame.

the FS100 records only at 59.94 fps. With P2 you get better recording times if you lower the native frame rate.

Not true.
As long as you are shooting in 720 you can set the FS-100 to record in either P2 PN or Quicktime PN modes (PN = Native Framerates).
Simply make sure your camera is set to 720 24P (NOT PN)
Then set your firestore to P2 PN or QT PN mode.
The display will still show only 111 minutes of recording time, until you hit the record button for the first time and record a short clip.
It will then update the recording time, and you'll see it says 264 minutes (or something like that).

(but in version 3.0 of the software, this only works for 24 & 30... variable frame rates still take up the full 59.94hz bandwidth).
(oh, and it won't play back your audio either -- audio gets recorded, but will not play back; the only way to hear your recorded audio is to import the files into a computer and play from there).

why bother with the FS100 when there's the 16 gig cards available. bad first impression on the FS100 has been hard to shake for over a year.

Why bother? Because I'm recording full sets of music. An hour to an hour and a half.

Two 16GB cards in 24PN ends being 80 minutes of straight record time. So it may work for you. On the other hand, the FS-100 is available and the 16GB cards are on national backorder.

I like my FS100, minus the fragility, but it's becoming a pain in the arse to haul around on my belt and be careful not to damage it... Considering a trade... FS100 for 4x8GB or 2x16GB P2 cards... any thoughts?

The FS 100 is overrated. Period.
Get as many 8 GB's or 16Gb's that you can. I've had a FS-100 damaged in 2 weeks use. I may be an imbecile, but I'm going cards.

was a good choice for a while, but I think that these lower cost p2 cards and larger capacity is why the cineporter didn't come out. Only a short term fix for now. Can ya imagine when the 32 gig cards hit and they are a grand too. wow.

Thanks to you and Barry on telling me this. I shot this weekend at a music festival. I shot at 720/30P with the Firestore set to P2 PN and got 222 minutes on the Firestore. This is exactly what I needed. It looks so much better then in SD.
I still had to dump the Firestore between sets, but when I had a two hour set, I could at least record the whole set ! :2vrolijk_08:

I shot 2 weddings, 2 corporate videos, 5 Sports games with the Firestore and all I have to say. I t is combersome but it gives you some room to shoot. I have had no problems...KNOCK ON WOOD. I can't wait for the 32, 64 128 cards.
