I was fortunate to work with award-winning documentary director Greg Whiteley on some interviews for his newest feature, Resolved (http://onepotatoproductions.com/resolved/).
The film studies the culture of high school and college debate. I don't want to give any of it away, but perhaps Greg will drop into this thread and talk about this exciting project!
Greg also directed the critically-acclaimed New York Doll.

...You can't seriously be expected to follow a debator speaking at that speed...

We learned other vocalization techniques that were just as stange or stranger. Over-enunciation and facial expression are also a real treat to watch.
The real fun is when they play your video back to you and you don't really recognize your own voice and face.
...all part of a great training program.
However, the hard part is getting the students to think. ...at least to think beyond the dogma and to what is really behind thier arguments so they can speak extemporaniously.

I only spent a day with Greg at one of the larger regional debates in Dallas, Texas and found that I was able to tune into most every speaker after a fairly short period of time. This rapid pattern wasn't prevalent when I was in high school, so I was surprised at how much had changed from a technical standpoint.
What wasn't different was how passionate and articulate these kids are about debate and the subjects they argue. All the young people I met were quite sharp both on and off-topic. One young woman we interviewed was dealing with quite a bit within the debate community and I still find myself thinking about her situation from time to time.
I know Greg discovered a very interesting and compelling story string within the larger culture of debate. The best documentary filmmakers find interesting characters in almost any situation or environment and then reveal the truth of what makes them who they are.
