View Full Version : Hudson in San Diego Needs Partner!

Hi everyone. Most of you know me here. Now I'll get to the point.

I am looking for a partner/collaborater/film junkie to hook up and pursue mutual goals and interests. I am looking for someone who can contibute and bring something to the table, so to speak.

I have a DVX100, Tripod (albeit 501) and a fast enough computer for POST. What I mean is, I'm not looking for someone to come along with nothing to offer and use my DVX100 for their own personal gain. Ideally you have your own DVX100 (NOT NECESSARY AT ALL) and/or other film accessories whether it be in LIGHTING, DOLLY, SOUND, NLE SOFTWARE etc)

What I am am getting at is, this is hard enough by yourself and with another person it is much easier and only serves to fuel forward momentum. I am 33. Married with child and own my own start-up company. What this means is that I am in NO position to drop everything and pursue film full-time. I have responsibilities that override my film passion.

What this also means is that, I am my own boss and can more or less have alot of freedom. Hopefully you are in a similar predicament.

My goals are simple. I want to DIRECT films. PERIOD. My influences are

Horror, Sci-fi, action-adventure, thrillers. I am not out to make a political statement. I want to have fun and entertain people. I have alot to learn in becoming a DP and Director but have the drive. You have similar goals. I want to find someone who can contibute equally not only in technical equipment but in desire. I also write screenplays (I hate writing). We can partner up in a combined PRODUCER/WRITER/DIRECTOR relationship. But do not be fooled, what I really want to do is DIRECT. :)

Perhaps you have major POST skills? or the desire to write and Produce? Or maybe it's as simple as you just wanting to make films.

My personal interests outside of film are Basketball, my family, and... Oh fuck it. FILM!

That being said, I live in North County San Diego and own a DVX100 with Tripod. I plan on aquiring more accessories throughout this year (Sound, NLE, etc). Send me a Private Message if this sounds like something you want or need.

My goals are to make quailty films with the DVX to enter into festivals, put on DVD, etc etc etc.

Check out www.indieclub.com... they should have a few hundred San Diego members, perhaps some of them will be a perfect match?

I understand you pain. I'm leaving Chicago, for the month of Feb to shoot a month long doc. (Vancouver ending in L.A.) with just my camera, shotgun mic, tripod, and apple laptop and 200 hrs of tape. We all seem to be in random places. I have not "read" any posts from a user in Chicago. Without sounding fake, if I could help you, I would. Best of luck.

Why is it I need you to kick me in the tail? I know. I know. I know. I will. I will. Can I get a link to this light place? $50.00 ? :)

I have a couple shorts in mind and am also thinking of that film contest for the non profit pregnancy thread.

John, if you want some moral support from the other side of the country, I could at least be a sounding board for ideas or I could critique your scripts. That stuff's easy enough over cyberspace.

I'm in OC and have a pretty busy schedule, but I'm interested in getting involved in a project. I was an assistant production coordinator for a small municipally owned station 16 years ago. I turned down a camera operator job at CBS to stay home and raise children. I can edit on FCP4 and am learning AVID. I have been a live music/action director for mult-camera shoots for two years. Email me for the details. MaureenCunningham@earthlink.net ;D

I'm in LA.. I 'm looking for people like you to work with. i have all the gear my own camera. lights, 3 FCP stations. Right now I'm looking for groups that want to do a music video.

But the only problem I'm running into is not finding them with some kind of budget low, med, high.. something to pay the crew.

Right now I'm working on my short & looking for a projects to take to a festival.

I have a video to shoot late Janurary. The catch? NO PAY for anyone. :(

It'll pay-off and it's great experience for me. A second DVX on the set would only bene the situation. ;) Send me a Private Message with your email, I'd love to discuss our options IN regards to making films, collaboration, etc etc etc.

Again, I just want to shoot films. My e-mail is:

Hey man, I just got my new DVX100A last night and I live in San Diego. I'm looking for people as well to do projects. In fact, we are pre-producing a music video right now. It's basically to test out the camera. Nothing too serious. Email me jelizond@umich.edu

Hey Yall. I live in Southern Orange County and I hear what you are all saying. I'm 19 and go to college and that is my main priority, but I am always looking to learn more and work on sets. I have a DVX, nice bogen sticks and 503 head, mics up the ass, gnarly post system, you name it, I got it. All from "shooting weddings, birthdays, and other crap" Anywho, hit me up if you want to work out some kind of meeting for us to pitch scripts and maybe assemble a crew or something. I love directing, but I'd love the chance to pitch my scripts, improve and hone my skills as a DP or whatever.

Hey... don't forget me! I'm also eager to direct, but perhaps more usefully for other folks I'd like to do some sound work... design, recording, post. I don't have anything wireless (yet), but I do have everything else (well, two ProTools setups, lots of mics, cables, stands, and recording/editing experience)... plus all my DVX gear and DVD production skills...

Hey Scott

I remember you saying this once before. Damn. That is cool. cause it's hard to find someone who

1. Willingly will perform for the camera seriously
2. Likes the behind the scenes action as well!

We need to talk then and see what we can figure out. I'll act only so far as to fill a small role (think Quentin !) and only if needed; but IM not afraid to do it.

Do you have headshots and all that? Hmmmmmmmmmm........

It's be nice to have a serious actor. :)

04-04-2004, 01:45 PM
We will most def. need a producer who is going manage funds, and a casting direcetor to get online castings, as well as post stuff in Back Stage West if we want to get some REAL actors. Most will accept little to no pay as long as we feed them. We all need to get together soon, and you can all relax, I'll just direct everything, so we wont have to argue anymore. HAHA, kidding. I love to do a lot of things. I'm a pretty good camera man, with my V-8, sticks. I don't have a crane, but have operated enough of them to use it well. We need to meed, and make sure to bring your scripts, multiple copies if you can.

Who says that anymore? :) That show got cancelled, so it's over now.

Anyway, directing is something that will definitely upset some people, It's not the most important thing in the world for me right NOW. However, If I write something that I hold near and dear to my heart, I think I am going to want to direct it. Not saying I am, but it all depends. You started this whole movement for a SoCal DVX filmmakers meeting, so I think it would only be fair to let you start by Directing the first thing we do. Just everyone keep an open mind on the Directing subject. Don't be afraid to try doing other jobs if someone helps you make your film. Give and take, that's how it goes.

J.R. Hudson
04-04-2004, 02:31 PM
My bro and I still say the PUNK'd comment but lately we have been saying "You just got served"; shit, I still say awesome.

Well, I orginally had the idea (one of the orginals) behind the DVXsocal thing but having it up in Holllywood lost my interest a long time ago.

We will all be opended minded about this and whether I direct or you or...

I would hope it is a true indi guerilla with everyone kicking ass on multiple 'jobs' (as much as it would allow anyway). I can say one thing for sure, Im not up for PA'ing or Gripping!

Been there/done that.

We have to have an idea that can move forward. perhaps an inspiration can start with a GENRE first? And move from there?

I love how cop story has its own genre. I would say, like before, a se7en type of noir, with the Barton Fink Flare. I think that wouldn't be as diffficult for locations, costuming. It would put a lot of pressure on the DP, casting, Director, and esp. the Writer.

We have to have an idea that can move forward. *perhaps an inspiration can start with a GENRE first? *And move from there?

Let's start instead with the music! I suggest we work around the idea of a classical music soundtrack, and I can provide beautiful recordings of public domain works by great musicians who'll play for free (well, for free recordings). Something creepy and mysterious with music from the early 1900's... say Scriabin.

Also, I've got some robots, who have worked in theater and soccer competition in the past, and they've been bugging me to get into the movies. (See http://ullanta.com/ullanta ). A heartrending robot story?

If someone wants to help write some grants, I'm sure we could get nice funding for a Quechua language film.

---------

OK, here's another gripe: I'm sick and tired of directors who claim they care about sound, and then refuse to acknowledge that there will even be sound in their film when production starts...

PurposeDriven
04-05-2004, 11:57 PM
I'm pretty sure that the score comes once the filming has started, or at least, you don't base the film on the scoring. No hard feelings on the REAL actor bit, but you are just one man, most films require more then that, and we would like to get as many peopl eas we can to audition for the parts we are casting.

Ullanta you are totaly right about sound! Whether it is location sound or the scoring. belive I read somewhere that Gearge Lucas filmed every scene in American Graffetti(Speel Check) To the exact songs for the soundtrack. And that that he wrote the scenes for the songs. 8)

PurposeDriven

That's not the way I like to operate. My vision should not be affected by the composer. The composer may come with some great ideas, but I want him to accomodate my film, not the other way around. Elvis, that's also a bad film to use because it was made to be played with modern radio music the entire time. Not like a typical film that was scored. From what I have read, Lucas listens to music, not the score, and uses music he likes to find a pacing and theme that he likes, and coveys that to the composer. You don't score a film before you shoot it IMHO. You get samples of themes from the composer through-out the production, but it's not fully scored.

Cartoon... yeah... all I have got to say. Regardless, if you want to score something so badly before you shoot. Then score the damn thing. If Hudson is the director for the first project, let him say what he wants to do. I don't really care, it's his vision.

ullanta
04-06-2004, 01:24 PM
Woody Allen says "Manhattan" started with Gershwin.

But seriously... indeed, many projects have begun with the music, or the sound. I don't think that's arguable, or desireable to argue. As for what we're discussing here, I'm just throwing out ideas.

However... even if your script is written, your stories are boarded, your lights are flagged... if you don't know what your sound is gonna be as you're shooting, you're leaving more than half of your end product up to fate. The role of audio in a film is tremendous; it is PRIMARY rather than secondary. Sound sets moods more effectively than vision, maintains continuity across cuts, often determines the level of intimacy of a scene, presents information about the world offscreen... and so much more.

Try this: Choose a movie you don't know to well. Listen to it without watching it (as we often do with TV, going about our business in the house, etc.). Watch it without listening to it. Which is a more satisfactory, rich experience?

Many people - and books, articles, etc - will tell you that the most common weak point of low-budget films is sound. Don't fall victim to the misconception that film is primarily a visual medium; or, at least, please don't assume that sound is something that happens purely in post. Don't throw away your artistic power, or neglect it!

-Barry

PurposeDriven
04-06-2004, 02:11 PM
You could have done w/o the sign off of your name. My whole argument is, I don't write the music before you shoot. If you come to the set, with certain musical peices that you want your score to sound like, that's all good. You are also getting me all wrong. I have over $12,000 in sound equipment. I'm a freaking sound technician for a larage church. I know the importance of audio, I'm still on the score or soundtrack. Sound is vital, very important, but the score compliments the film, not the other way around. Or else you are going to get a music video in a theatrical style.

-Ken

J.R. Hudson
04-06-2004, 02:21 PM
My thoughts are that the score/sound design is equally as important as each element. But I want my SOUND to compliment my visuals; not dictate.

If I happen to be inspired by a piece of music or have a great 'hook' in mind as I write; thats all good.

Elvis
04-06-2004, 02:35 PM
Hey Ken, Is that your equipment or the churches? If it is yours what all do you have? I'm looking for a sound guy?

PurposeDriven:

Oh, well. Let's chalk this up to differences of opinion.

I'm not sure what you mean about the name sign-off...?

John:

I can work with that :-). My suggestions were for mood setting... however, in thinking ahead to the editing process, I think it's good to know, at least in general terms, what the sound'll be doing when shooting. A sonic complement to the storyboard so that one knows what needs to be captured, what rhythms are driving things, what the audience will know about what's offscreen...

Daniel_Runyon
04-06-2004, 02:49 PM
I must admit that I was inapproprietly posting non - John's project related stuff...I wasnt at all refering to this project, which I'm not and am not going to be involved in...I'm in GA! I just happened upon the little bit about the score and all that. I'm butting out now! But yeah....good point....cartoons! But if John gets interested in a cross between The Wiz (you know, the Diana Ross musical) and 28 Days..... Zombies The Musical...then yeah........
