This is a Heinz commercial contest entry I wrote, shot, and directed. Shot with a HVX200 and Brevis35 adapter and Nikon 50mm prime lens. Spent 48 hours editting, composing music, and animating VFX for the spot. Was done completely hand held for the documentary look. It was interesting to adjust focus while running in the streets of NYC. We had to move very quickly because the police were following us and getting suspicious of people shooting around midtown Manhattan.

Hey Drew,

So did you ever get stopped during the shoot? How long was the shoot? How large was your crew, including the actors? No permit I'm assuming.

Thanks for the info.

thanks mindzeye!

Arrik, it would have been a different story if I had a tripod, reflectors, dollies, boom operator, etc. That being said, this is the first shoot I've ever done where I actually had no crew except for myself and six actors. Which actually worked in my favor because I was going for the hand held documentary style anyways. The only problem was that with the equipment I did have, it would have been difficult to convince the cops that it was just a home video camera. Especially with the mattebox, rails, brevis35 adapter, lens, LCD monitor and mic attached. Fortunately we moved around quickly and frequently enough that the police couldn't find a reason to stop us even though they followed at a distance the entire time. We got all the footage I needed in just under two hours including all the pickup and POV shots.

Doing post, editing, and music, however, was a nightmare. That took two days non stop without sleep. The video ended up being submitted just hours before the deadline was over.

Wow!
Other than me being picky and thinking you went a little too shallow in some of the shots this was a stunning piece of work.
I definitely gave it some comment love.
