editing flv file

been using ook! to rip some videos off of the net, and i wanted to open them in vegas, but i have been getting the ol "unsupported format" msg.

the files, as indicated in the subject are flash .flv files...would i simply need to d/l a codec for this, or what should i do?

also, what is the difference between swf and flv?
