I'm considering buying an HV20 to use as a secondary camera for green screen and capturing plates for 3d compositing. (My main camera is a DVX) However I've read all kinds of strange things about its 24p mode. Is it different from capturing any other 24p camera? And can you use a regular dv cam for capturing. Or do you have to use an HD cam?

Yes it's different from other 24p cameras, because it doesn't include the pulldown flags. So automated 24p extraction isn't so easy. Most every other 24p camcorder inserts the flags so NLEs can extract the footage without pulldown.
And if you shoot standard-def, you can use a regular DV camera, but if you shoot HD you'd have to use a Canon or Sony HDV camcorder to capture with.
