View Full Version : Error importing P2 clips

I get “One of more P2 clips failed to import; probable incomplete or corrupt clips.” from FCP5 when trying to import (file menu, import, Panasonic P2). I can see all the thumbnail images for the various clips, but it doesn't matter which clip I select - same error message. Format was DVCPROHD using Firestore FS-100. Clips play back OK in camera or on HDTV. I'm thinking maybe FCP version 5.0.1 had a bug?

There may be incorrect information in the XML file that indicates that the clip is spanned and missing a segment when it isn't.

Another possibility is that you are trying to perform pulldown removal on files that doesn't require it.

PS: Black on gray sucks.

I looked at the XML (in fact, here is the video portion) and I see a 2:3 pulldown in there but I have no idea where this came from or how this might be causing the error. I see nothing in the XML that might signify a spanned clip. I get the same error whether selecting a short test clip or a long run (the last clip is about 12 minutes). Being new to the camera and the Firestore, I'm sure I must be doing something wrong, but I hope that doesn't mean the clips are forever un-editable? The XML:

<Video ValidAudioFlag="true">
<VideoFormat>MXF</VideoFormat>
<Codec>DV100_720/59.94p</Codec>
<FrameRate DropFrameFlag="false">59.94p</FrameRate>
<StartTimecode>00:00:00:00</StartTimecode>
<StartBinaryGroup>F3002482</StartBinaryGroup>
<Pulldown>2:3</Pulldown>
<AspectRatio>16:9</AspectRatio>
<VideoIndex>
<StartByteOffset>32768</StartByteOffset>
<DataSize>100800000</DataSize>
</VideoIndex>
</Video>

THoff,

I purchased Raylight-for-mac as an experiment to troubleshoot this problem. Using Raylight I was able to view these clips in FCP5. So the clips on the FS-100 seem to be okay.

So it is still a mystery why FCP can't import them without errors.

Try toggling the option for removing pulldown.

I've had this problem, too. Have you tried restarting everything (Mac/Software,) unplugging the firewire cable and plugging it back in? Also, try the free updates for Final Cut. I'm running 5.0.4 and it seems to be working just fine with the P2s.

So it is still a mystery why FCP can't import them without errors.

Simple -- FCP's importing feature doesn't work very well. Please make a comprehensive bug report to Apple as soon as you figure out what the "magic combination" is to get FCP to work.

The files are good, the files are almost always good. When FCP fails to import files it's almost certainly because FCP's broken, not because there's anything wrong with the files.

There is no point in making a bug report for FCP 5.0.1 -- just update to a current version.

Wow! Great suggestion about upgrading to 5.0.4! Thanks! I've always applied all Apple software updates, so don't understand why this update never happened. I've posted a question in the FCP forum asking how to make this happen...

Thanks to all of you folks for each of your suggestions! The upgrade to 5.0.4 was the final hurdle that enabled me to start FCP edits from my FS-100 clips (and I learned a ton of stuff along the way).
