Hey. Anyone know anything about TV's and monitors? Everyone knows there are issues with using LCD monitors like fake noise and incorrect color reproduction. Everyone seems to recommend CRTs instead of LCDs but how about using a projection TV like a DLP or a front projector unit for such activities? Anyone know?

While my experience in CRT vs. LCD vs. Plasma vs. projection is not in the sudio, I serviced and set up these devices in training rooms, auditoriums and the like for a decade.

From my own experience, I have always prefered the over all look of CRT's for color saturation, contract and over all picture quality. Granted LCD's and plasmas have come a long way, the way they produce an image limits their ability to reproduce truely accurate color.

Plasmas come closer to CRT's in that they produce their own light from each pixel via electrons hitting phosphor. LCD's are totally limited by the amount of light and uniformity of that light that is used as the backlight. LCD pixels are just very small shutters allowing or stopping light from getting through. Combine this with 2 polarizers and a colored matirix to give each pixel it's own color and you have an image. They are much better than even a few years ago but have limits on the contract ratio an color rendition.

Depending on the projection type you are in the same boat. CRT projection is almost hard to come by now has the same advantages of regular CRT monitors. DLP's are like LCD in that you have a single light source refracted into the 3 primary colors and then bounced off very very small mirrors, one for each pixel, to make the picture. You have better contract and color than LCD's though.

Hope this helps some, again I don't have any experience as to what is best and most used in studios but have used these proudcts for a long time.

CRTs are gonna be tough to beat. There are some LCDs out there that have a good contrast ratio, but the price keeps me way far away. I don't see any reason to replace my Sony CRT anytime soon.
