What does everyone use to protect and store their cameras? Is the 16X9 grab bag any good?
Thanks

I use the Kata CCC-10-A. It's big but I have room for my HVX, wireless mic transmitters and receivers, handheld mic, 25' mic cable, headphones, screw drivers, fisheye lens, lens filters, extra tapes, batteries, lens cloth, hand wipes, HVX instructions and a shotgun mic attached to the camera. My goal was to get all of these things in one go-bag withoout having to move anything to get to stuff.

The CC-10-A is a really nice bag. There have been some folks that like the Kata CC-193 too. It's a bit smaller, yet you can still fit the camera with a smaller matte box mounted.

Tom,
I am still on the lookout for the perfect bag.
I currently use these three for different situations: Ogio Ty Video 2 backpack, Burton 29L Zoom Pack, and Lowe Pro A/W Road Runner.
The Ogio is the closest to perfect for my needs; its roomy, stable, and fits a laptop. The straps are only so-so.

The Ogio Ty Video 2 seems to be the best all around backpack bag. Very multi purpose. You can fit 2 full camera setups in it, with a laptop, among other things. The straps are ok, but I never had issues with the camera or other things bouncing around, as long as you put everythign in there well. Great price on the Ogio Ty 2 also!

I use a Porta Brace DVO-2U.
I got it with the idea of having not just a camera bag, but a camera/laptop bag and it has worked out great with the space.

1650 but would love to also have a bag for run and gun, that Ogio looks mighty sexy but no way for a lens adapter or course so the Kata might be good for those with one... run and gun with lens adapter is only for the crazy though so 1650 + Ogio would be a perfect setup IMO

Grab a im2500 storm case (hard case) and a Kata 207 (backpack) and you never have to worry about a baggage handler's sweaty hands ever touching your camera.

hey andrew,
look into the Dakine Reload bag. its 47L and pretty much just a big rectangle but with good tripod support (i run 755b legs and it works good).
and you won't be crushing it of have to put it on its side like in the zoom bag.

I followed another thread in here about just this subject and ended up ordering a Kata MC-61 (which comes with a free dolly for the bag) from B&H.
The bag's in the mail, I'll comment more when I actually get my hands on it.
My dealer told me the 16x9 small bag is one of the best, but he couldnt get one for at least a week or two.
I have a HVX200/mattebox plus accessories.
Good Luck!

I'm running a Pelican 1560 and I'm in love. Tough as nails and with wheels to boot, it's a pleasure to travel with. Fits my HVX, XM1, extra lens, batteries, chargers, tapes, cards the lot. Only bugger is it isn't carry on size for air travel.

For those of you who use backpacks, do you put the camera in the bag with the lens pointing up or down?
The Ty Evans backpack looks nice, but I remember reading a thread recently about a backpack user that had some problems (red and green channels switched, or something like that, from storing with the lens facing down). Have you had any similar experiences?

I have the bag and I haven't had any problems it being pointed down, but I store it in the bag with it being in normal position.

I own this bag... very strong, well designed, although I wish the bottom pocket lead to a different compartment other than the inside of the bag. I used it to do a wedding (flight from NY to MI) and it handled itself well. The bag actually creates a shell around your equipment because the top is arched and padded and the bottom is equally padded if not better. I'd recommend this bag for major events (concerts, plays, days of shooting). vs. just going to do a 3hour event in a park or some place informal, for me a back pack like those from kata (Rugsack 103) http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/368038-REG/Kata_KTR103_R_103_GDC_Rucksack.htmlor a (Hiker backpack 205) http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/422742-REG/Kata_KT_HB_205_HB_205_GDC_Hiker_Backpack.html would be perfect (you can check their website to see which cameras fit in these bags). The 205 is a little big but it's still worth it.

The afore-mentioned Kata MC-61 bag arrived today. I have to say that I'm pretty disappointed. In the other thread I had been following, the guy said he was able to get his HVX200 in with the mattebox attached, where as I guess this is technically true...it takes some serious effort to make it happen. When it finally does get in, the fit is so tight that I'd be worrying about it constantly. The top of the case has a hard, plastic cover - which gives it extra strength...it's just not big enough to comfortably use it with the mattebox attached.
That being said, the case is extremely well constructed, very clean and well padded with plenty of compartments to store stuff.
I guess I'll get used to taking the mattebox on and off for each location.
ohh..and Im going to buy a backpack for quicker run-n-gun shoots.

Considering buying one and getting one for free...
Underneath the description it shows that you get the previous model free with purchase (the 2600 gets you a free 2500, etc etc)

I ended up getting the Petrol PCPR-1 and it seems to hold all my accesories and gear really well. It is exactly the same as the 16X9 version and 30 dollars cheaper at BH. So far so good. Thanks

I have a Pelican 1650 (Molded interior for HVX200 and wheels). Its very heavy but holds a lot. Also, a Kata for run and gun, it can hold the HVX with a 35mm adapter and a PL lens attached, but the mattebox must come off. It will still fit inside... just off to the side.

I just got the Dakine Reload in the mail today. The bag seems to be perfect for "run and gun" shoots. I needed something more portable that would fit in an overhead. Plenty of pockets for extra storage. I'm able to fit the hvx200, light, battery back for light, 3 camera batteries, seinnheiser wireless mic kit, shotgun mic, handheld mic, mic cables and tripod strapped to outside. It pretty much holds everything you need for a day shoot. Well made with good supportive straps. It's nice and stealth looking so you wouldn't tell it's a camera bag. I picked one up online for only $109.

We use a Pelican 1510 for our first HVX 200 and we just got the Thermodine for our second HVX.
The 1510 is great for travel as you can take it carry on. But you can only get 3 batteries, (including the one on camera), a couple extra P2 cards, an emergency DV tape or two, basic cables and Barry's book of course.
The Thermodine has considerably more room, also has wheels and is about 3/4 as tough as the Pelican. It's also about twice the price.
There are so many options. But most any options with a lot of storage won't fit carry on.
Life is full of tradeoffs. Good luck.

Different airlines have slightly different requirements.
I could be wrong, but I thought the Pelican 1510 was the largest that could meet all flight requirements local and international.
Don't forget to get the TSA locks as well.

THIS DEF. ISN"T A CARRY ON CASE
I have the pelican 1610 case. I got it at B & H for only a couple hundred dollars.
I have some pros and cons about this case. The cons are simply my usage needs. The case is amazing and I am not worried about my camera at all.
PROS
-Very strong, sturdy casing.
-Foam is nice and solid yet "squishy" enough to absorb shocks
-Lots of room while still being able to carry it with you on short hikes to a location.
-Has a pull out handle and wheels for easier mobility
CONS
-Very Heavy, about 20lbs. itself so it gets very tiring carrying it very quickly.
- IT is very bulky. Sometimes I wish I had something just big enough for my camera and then another for my other stuff. That way if I only need my camera I don't have to carry around all of the other equipment.
-The wheels seem kind of "plasticy" and I am worried that after a lot of rough use they might break.
-The latches seem extremely hard to close. They are easier to open, which is when you would want them to be harder to unlatch.
All in all this is a wonderful case. I would by one again and I would suggest this to anyone that doesn't "live up stairs". As far as quality goes you def. get a lot of bang for your buck.

Porta-Brace PB2550 hard case... Carry on size with wheels - I travel a lot with the camera.
A little tight on the interior when you pack in batteries, a couple of Lav mikes, and a shotgun; but I can have it with me in the overhead bin.

MB, We get more stuff in our 1510 than you got in that big honkin 1610.
I'd pack more stuff in there or get the 1510 for normal use.
I did notice that you got Barry's book in there as we do also. :)

I use a porta brace and the 1510. It really depends on where I'm going: I started a thread that is to show many cases in use by users on the board so people can get an idea about cases before they buy:

Ted, I am a broadcast student and it took me two years to save for the camera so needless to say right off the bat I couldn't afford anything else. I got the bigger case for growing room. I have been looking at getting a smaller pelican to put just the camera in for everyday use and then keeping the 1610 for equipment when I can get it.

mb, Planning ahead was a wise choice. Once you make a ton of money you can buy all the toys. :)
Maybe throw a handful of Mini-DV tapes in there for show even if you don't use them. :)
Where can you buy the Ty Video bag? Can't find where it's in stock. I'm in Australia too so hopefully somewhere ships OS.

I have a Lowepro DZ100 and it works great for the HVX. In fact, I've ragdolled down an entire mountain face with my HVX in it and it came out just fine on the other end :)
I used to have the Burton Zoom pack,l but it sucks for the HVX, would be great for an SLR though....

I have the porta brace hardshell and it's great. I like it because it uses a better system than the foam inserts of the pelicans.
I also use a Lowe Pro Vertex 200 AW and its a fantastic backpack that I've walked around with all day, has a tripod holder, rain guard, laptop pocket and plenty of room for camera, batteries, hard drives, etc.
My 2 cents.

I have a Pelican 1600 with custom cut foam for maximum protection and a KATA 193 soft bag when I'm on the run. If you are going to get a Pelican case I'd strongly suggest custom cut over pick and pluck, it will stand up to the rigours of use much better. KATA soft bags are the best I've found. Very well made and flexible divider system plus nice extras such as a rain cover and movable internal pouches.

I agree. I own both custom cut foam and pick and pluck cases. Even though the custom cut foam case costs $60 to $100 more, it is very durable and well thought out for fitting equipment. I would purchase another one without hesitation. For run and gun this is not a good case. For storage and long rough transportation it is one of the best in its class.
