EDIT::Fixed the screenshots with ones from the actual time line instead of the DVD grabs. These look much better.
Here are some screenies from a feature shot on the HVX and Brevis35 shot in SD on tape. Johnny Tsang was DP and I was Lighting Designer. Directed by William Lappe. I got lucky and they gave me full control over lighting.

I have no idea. I didn't ask and when the subject came up I stayed out of it.

Thanks. I'm proud of it. I landed this gig from the lighting job I did for Mark Harris' "Katrina". http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=80006
This is like a 2+ hour movie but these were the only scenes I was able to pick up over the weekend. I came in on this gig half way through shooting because the other lighting designer had to go or something. I wish I would have lit the whole thing, I hated that the gig ended because everyone got along so well but we are getting together to enter that Assassin Creed contest for IFC.

I didn't have anything to do with the camera this time but also I took these grabs off a DVD using powerDVD and the pause button so I couldn't sit there and grab a perfect frame like I usually would in an NLE.

To answer the SD question, it was a matter of shooting time and no P2 cards.

I think you should have shot this too, Aram. Looks VERY "adapter-y." And shooting on tape?????
What was your lighting package?

yea that dp kinda isnt familiar with the setup. he shouullda been testing that rig to death before you guys started. if i were producing, i would consider that image performance unacceptable. you should have a "talk" with the dp.

I think I said I grabbed these from PowerDVD which gives shitty grabs as you can tell with the blockiness in the images. I will replace them with Avid Media Composer timeline grabs as I get the footage. You can still get the idea though from these. We had a truck full of lights and I used what the circuits in each location could handle popping a few fuses along the way.

I replaced the images in the first post with ones from the actual footage which are much crisper than the powerDVD crap ones I had up seen here.

I hope you can take some constructive critics...
I feel like the lightning is very artifical, there needs to be more realism in it.
Now I can almost feel the lightsources just outside of the frame. Soft the light, use a softbox if you can, or else the shadows will look like they are all on stage. Also, the images seems a bit uncolorgraded.
Because it's already filmed, you could do some grading of it to soften the artifical impact.
It would be nice to see some moving pictures though...

Thanks. This movie is a nior film so I only used soft lighting when I needed a back ground fill. They wanted a lot of high contrast areas in the frame and I added color to make the frames stand out. They are very happy with the end result which is all I can ask for :)
Here is our last short Glazarus where we used very natural looking lighting but its definitely lit. I used soft boxes and china balls for most of the indoor scenes.

Timur, that room was a nightmare. It was super tiny white box in hell and really low ceilings plus its a dolly shot that swings around them. The boom pole shadow was in a ton of takes so its possible thats a camera. Looks like one. I just grabbed a little footage from each scene from my friend. I went over and made my own timeline and just dragged clips so I definitely have bad takes in them. What do you think of the focus this time, much better than those powerDVD grabs right?

yea it looks better. Though i like the stagey lighting. but thats just me, everymovie ive shot has been theatrical style. i love that.

what is this film about???
Beat Takeshi

The trailer is being edited as I write this hopefully to be finished for the big wrap party Saturday. My friend is busting his ass trying to get all the audio synced and edited.
Thanks B, yeah it was a pleasure lighting that. The camera is actually shooting through bullet proof glass at a check cashing place. There is a shot where you can see his reflection walking up to her in the screenshots2 thing at the top of the thread.
The film is about a guy who has lived in the Bronx his whole life and hes getting fed up with it all. He has a friend that is out of control and he is trying to keep him from getting into too much trouble. He owes the mob, He is in a bi-racial marriage with a teen son and 3 little girls, he is a hot head. It touches on a ton of social issues in a blunt, non-PC way. Very strong language and racial tensions in it. Thats about all I know as of now.
There are a ton of funny ass bloopers that I'm probably going to take and edit a blooper reel when they finish editing.

Footie.. would be nice. You're coming to FL to shoot something ? lots of stuff going on down here now

I just watched an edit of a scene and its really tight. I'm hoping to have it in the next few days to put up. I think the plan is to show it at the wrap party tomorrow which would be cool. The movie is very racially motivated and should get some good press when they finish.
We shot something in Florida a few weeks ago but would love to come back and shoot something again thats not as tedious as a cooking show.

These look great !
Does anyone find the skin tones to be hurting ? I did a simple adjustment (not that you asked) and think it helps this frame in particular. Not all seem to have this prolem of OVERLY RED/ORANGE skin tones, but many do

Your cc looks good to me John, I'm not sure how they are going to color it though. I lit the whole thing with oranges and yellows to give a little nostalgic feel because of the actor to the left. Recognize him? Famous porn star from the 70s. Jamie Gillis.
