.avi isn't a codec. It's just a wrapper, and many codecs can be used with it. Whatever your file is, you must have the codec installed in order to use it.
So, you need to determine which codec the file you're trying to import is. You can use a program called G-Spot to determine it.
Then, you need to determine if you have the codec installed, and if you don't find it and install it.

hi,i saw your post yesterday so i made a couple of things to solve the problem
1) i was with version of vegas 6c and i updated it to 6d.when i was with version 6c and i tried to open an .avi file the filed in the bottom of vegas that indicates "building peaks" was to 0 % and the error message was displayed. After the update with version 6d i tried again without installing codecs 2 variants happened: i tried to open one random episode with format avi and the field "building peaks" reached 96% and the error message was displayed and 2nd when i tried with other episode or video clip the process |building peaks" ends successfully but in the time line in vegas is shown only the audio without the video.here is a preview:

why is loading only the audio?
i tried with g-spot but i didn't understood how to figure out which codec i needed.I noticed that in the video results there was a field "status":Codec(s) are Installed and the same with the audio. What does it means that i have the necessary codecs to open avi file or what.

I hope that i explained everything good.Any ideas?

Pretty sure that's saying the file was encoded using Xvid.

I get that pretty often with weird codecs...even when just trying to play them with Media Player.
Ah, the wonders of open source. Can't ask for your money back.
