I am about to get an XL2...I've always had problems with the stock lense...should I not even buy it and just get the 16X lense and 3X lense...or do I need the 20X for medium range shooting?

I personally think the 16x is a better option. The only thing you'll be giving up is a bit of reach and OIS; in exchange for a fully manual zoom and focus it's worth it IMO.
But good luck finding a used XL2 that comes without a stock lense. Probably you'll have to buy the body brand new and the 16x separately which is way more expensive.
I'm considering going that route myself and what I would do is look for a used XL2 at $2000-2200, sell the stock lense and then buy the 16x.
