View Full Version : New HVX200 Color shift failure?

I want to run this past everyone.

I bought a new HVX200 from a local dealer in SF about a week ago. The camera was great and suddenly..

I turned on the camera on a night news story and all the reddish tinted street lights where blue. I tried to white balance with no response. I changed between 3.2 and 5.6 with no change in the color shift. After hurriedly turning the camera off and on a couple on times the problem disappeared.

Then today I was shooting for AP TV and the problem showed up again!
This time it was during the day. I turned on the camera and all the reds in the frame where bright blue! No response from the white balance. The red signs, car tail lights and police light bars where BLUE. :Drogar-BlackEye(DBG The rest of the scene also looked strange to say the least. Actually surreal is a better adj.
If it wasn’t for the stress level I would think it was kind of cool.

Well I recorded the footage, took the battery of and on and the problem went away.
After returning to feed the footage, the satellite feed guy recognized the problem right away. He said, the camera was shifting the red and blue channels? He even reproduced the problem by swapping the red and blue cables on an other Beta deck.
Panasonic says they have never heard of this and said it was a bad camera.
Long story short I got a new camera and gave the dealer the tape to send to Panasonic for examination with the bad camera.

Anyone heard of this??
I am kind of concerned since my camera is one of the newer versions with the better LCD and different battery compartment.
Is there a problem or was this a freak incident?

I had the same exact problem but it just started when I got the M2.

If I leave the M2 on and the camera upright overnight, the colors shift and it seems like I have to do weird things for it to come back. Needless to say... it's only when I leave something on the front of the camera and stand it on it's base (mattebox, M2) that it'll do that.

So, I just won't do that. O_o;

Very very interesting.

First off what is a M2?

I think we may be up to something here.

I carry the camera in a roller case with the camera facing down and the lens laying on a foam pad.

You think this may have somthing to do with the camera staying upright on its lens too long?

If this is the case we may have a serious warning to give out.

i thnk your M2 setup is putting preasure on the internal lens/electrical components... try readjusting the setup ake the stress of the front threads.

What about my camera that had the same problem?

The camera never had a M2 on it.

The camera was inside a hard case that was left standing upright over night. The camera is fully suported inside the case but it is pointing down.

I guess the easy answer is "don't do that" but when using this type of case the camera has to be pointing down.

What type of case? I have Pelican cases and my camera either lays on its side (the dv tape side), or sits on its but (where the tripod mount is) in my case and the way I leave it setting...

Probably not a good idea to leave the camera resting in a manner where it is putting pressure on the lens, or an adapter is putting pressure on the lens.

i think maybe your LCD jusy is calibrated better. go into your settings and decrease brightness a touch and add some contrast, it makes the LC look wolrds better.

There are two older first generation Dvx's... Maybe that's what you are confusing... Unless of course, you have actually compared your HVX to the (un-designated, two older versions)... But, there was an upgrade to the DVX's LCD, which (if I remember) is the same one used in the HVX....

I had this problem, but it didn't show up on the recorded footage, just on the LCD. I don't know why. But it was a relief to see it didn't go to the recorded shot...

Sorry I was not clear.

My coworkers/friends have two older 1st generation HVX200. They where both bought when the HVX first came out.

All I know is my new HVX's LCD is better resolution, the battery compartment is different as are some menu settings.

Yes we put the cameras side by side and did a comparison.

Is the LCD really of a higher resolution or just more contrast or sharper ???? Can not imagine that this was not announced by Pannasonic and that you are the only one with more than one HVX which noticed it. Maybe it is just the product variation in the LCD quality which you notice.

I don't work for Panasonic so I don't know when or why or how.

All I know is the battery compartment has tabs instead of velcro, the menu is a little different and the LCD resolution is better (it is also is a little thicker).

I was told they changed the battery compartmant to fix the broken battery holder tab problem.

As far as the LCD goes I don't know. The newer HVX's LCD is different.

You've seen an HVX with Velcro in the battery compartment? O_o;

That was a in-the-field fix performed by some users, it was not a Panasonic repair. In fact, Panasonic (Jan) recommended against it.
