1. Is there a way to set it up so I can see through the viewfinder and lcd at the same time? Or is this only possible when the lcd faces you in a self-portrait type shot?

2. What exactly does pressing “EVF DTL” to emphasize the outlines do???

Yes, you can use both the EVF and LCD at the same time. When the EVF is set to AUTO, it will turn off when the LCD is flipped open -- simply set it to ON to keep the EVF active at all times.

EVF DTL uses edge enhancement to highlight contrast. It works best when the EVF is set to B&W mode.

It helps somewhat with manual focusing. When the image is out of focus, it will be soft and the highlighted edge enhancement will not be there.
