I would like to directly transfer from the p2 cards to an external harddrive. I bought a maxtor 320GB usb/1394 drive. My question is, when I transfer it following the instructions in the manual, What happens then? What can I do with the hard drive? What format is the footage? When I plug it into my Mac, will fcp recognize it immediately? can I view it without editing software (is it a .mov/.mpeg)? Thanks!!
i wasnt aware that it was possible to connect an external fw drive DIRECTLY to the hvx...
if it IS indeed possible (which id doubt - otherwise why would people be buying $2000 laptops and p2stores to offload to in the field) you'd need to first format the drive as mac OSx extended - non journaled before dumping footage
Yes you can directly offload to a hard drive USB or firewire. I suggest you gat Barry Greens DVDs and book which goes over this.
Camera in host mode you can use firewire to offload cards. Camera should format the drive first. Camera can verify the download too. UsB drive has to be an ON the Go type drive. camera has to be in device mode for this.
There are a couple of very important details that you should know. Maybe this thread can help.

well, i'll be darned - and i was even IN that thread - HA! i stand corrected
still it seems like extra effort just for the sake of effort - cant imagine why anyone would CHOOSE to have their camera out of service for, 5, 10, 15 min on location while it transfers - just to avoid buying a cheap laptop.
i guess it might be helpful in a pinch though ; )
