what is the advantage of a varicam now that the hpx500 is out

it takes better pictures. more lattitude, and is most likely sharper.

I think there needs to be a side by side comparision of the two - while it is possible varicam is superior due to more pixels etc - a side by side comparison I think will show, IMHO that they are closer then people expect. By having less pixels and pixel shift the noise level should be very low - and may offset some of the loss in resolution - plus the 500 can record in 1080 which MAY (needs to be tested) capture more rez in the codec - although likely HD-SDI out from varicam might be sharper.
I think until there is test its hard to say really - plus there are the intangibles - like recording to p2 and all that comes with that etc.

The pixel argument is a red herring. What the Varicam does have is a better DSP with much more flexibility and far more adjustability, all of which may indeed lead to a better picture.
But a few more pixels on the chip ain't gonna make much of a difference, if any.

I am just saying that as always its a side by side comparison that is really needed to see just how better

hpx500 is better for your wallet and shoots in 1080p24. This late in the game don't buy a varicam but if you are renting it is a toss up.

WEll.... a varicam despite its age, is still a REMARKABLE tool. you can ramp framerates, and the DPS like barry mentioned is Stellar. its image noise is nearly nonexistent. though the HPX500 will probably be a few stops faster.

i have demoed the hpx 500 and have seen varicam footage. There is simply no comparison at all, the varicam WINS hands down. Too bad the varicam is beyond my monetary reach.

theres a reason its still 40,000$ body only.

Not only can you ramp framerates, you also get a full range, and not just the 11 offered by the 500 (and the 11 or so more you can get with the hack).

mmm yea.. actually the hvx can do 2fps. im not sure anything can do a real 2fps right now. not even varicam. you can fake it but the 180degree shutter for 1/4 second exposures is hard to fake.

2 fps is one you can get with the hack, yes. But the Varicam offers everything from 4 to 60.
