Hi,

I want to shoot a movie in 720P and PN mode in the near future.
I uselly shoot in standard Interlaced DV mode. What frusterates me is that wen recording in progressive mode you get an gosthing on your monitor when maken a fast pan. Will this appear like that later on any television or will I have to fix in post.
They all say 720p will be the futured television Hi-def standard but wen the image shakes making a pan what te use? or do you have to interlaced it for TV altouch my home TV is a HD ready one. What am I overlooking here?

Use a higher framerate, a faster shutter speed, or slow down the pan.

Yes you will get that strobbing effect when you pan in progressive mode. However, you can prevent this from happening by following the specified speeds for panning as detailed in Barry's HVX book. You can also find this informaton elsewhere. The bottom line is: if you pan too fast it will strobe... if you pan at the proper speed it will not strobe.

So as I understand this is absolutly normal? Ok thanks for the reply. So , am gone have to pan slowly. But I can asume this strobbing effect comes by the digital recording or do they have the same thing in the mechanical cams to.

It is the same in mechanical film cameras. You can effect the perceived strobing by adjusting shutter speed to either increase or decrease motion blur.

Rule of thumb for avoiding strobe completely is panning no faster than 7 seconds for objects to pass from one side of the frame to the other.

There is a zone in panning speed where strobing is most noticeable. Pan more slowly or more quickly, and the strobing becomes less apparent.
