it seems like the auto-focus on my DVX is way better than on my HVX. why is that?

First question. Why would you use auto focus when shooting HD (or any format for that matter)?

The Autofocus has a direct response relationship to the framerate. In framerate modes that are slower than typical 60i video, such as 24p, the response is slower.
I guess this issue doesn't pop up on too many camcorders because most of them shoot at 60i all the time.

I also believe I have seen on this forum in the past a reference to quicker auto focus response in 1080 over 720 which would go along with what John Froton stated.

we're shooting standard def to tape on the HVX in 24p. So pretty much the same format we're shooting on the DVX.
i was using the autofocus on a slow dolly-in shot to keep the actor in focus. I find it almost impossible to do this using manual focus.
the DVX seems to be much better at holding the subject in focus.
i was just wondering if there was a reason for this or if maybe there's something i'm missing.
