So I had a couple minutes for an interview. I was wearing headphones and using a shotgun mic. It was my first day with the shotgun, and didn't notice the sound of the pool cleaner was in the headphones, I could hear it from the outside of my headphones, if that makes sense. Anyway, his audio is fine, but the sound of the pool cleaner is fucking it up really bad. I moved the interview to a less noisy place after about a minute and a half. But, I need the stuff he is saying in that noisy area. Does anybody know how to fix this in final cut, or can someone help me. I wasn't sure if this was an editing issue, but I put it here cuz I need help fast! sorry. thanks.

dont know about final cut, but Audition has a pretty impressive noise removal filter - just feed it a sample of just the noise and decide how much you want to pull out. Just had an air conditioner that had to get pulled out last week. Worked like a charm. It muck up the original audio a tad bit but this was going to web so it didnt matter all that much.

If it's a constant sound, you're in a better situation. Figure out what hertz the sound is playing at, use a signal generator to create a similar wavelength, invert it and then paste it over the audio

you can get a 30 day trial of audition from www.adobe.com (http://www.adobe.com)

You could also use the free, open source program Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) to remove the noise.

you can use the filters in soundtrack pro (part of final cut studio). Look at the help file for how.

I've never used Audacity on a Mac (though I've used it on both Windows and Linux), but it's touted as working on Mac. I'd try the Audacity forum, the help list, or even the help list archives. You'll either help yourself (by getting it to work) or you'll help a whole comunity by helping to identify a bug.

Can you provide a longer sample, preferably one that includes a few seconds of just pool cleaner noise?

Pool cleaner noise is pretty broadband and inconsistent. Some basic noise filters will clear it up a little but don't expect miracles without destroying the dialog. I would also roll off everything below 120hz to kill that rumble.

A wide shot showning the thing making the noise is often helpful in these types of situations. If your audience sees and indentifies the source of the noise they will accept it and move on.
