I've got a new HVX and was playing with never using cards unless handheld and just recording into FCP. This seems to be the way for me, instant preview, no logging, everything named as it happens and way more recording time than a firestore (200gigs)

now is there any down side to this? I'd be doing backups to an external every hour or so of capture.

it just seems lke the way to go , and I will also know that i really have the clips (so many posts about p2 card and the firestore)

Sure. I've done that in a studio situation and it's great. I've gone into MacBook Pro with Express 3/4 SATA card to an external SATA drive.

actually i've been working on the field work today in my backyard
tripod is no problem with the macbook pro , but for moving i've installed InsomniaX
to keep the laptop from sleeping when the lid is closed. i've been watching the heat issue but its been ok for the time being. so laptop in the bag and just keep recording. then edit the long clip later. I'll see how this goes Also have to watch the movement to not "jar" the drive

what kind of bag are you using?

though youve definitely admirably cleared a few workflow hurdles. this seems like a big pain in the ass just to avoid p2 or firestore - ive used both daily for nearly a year without a problem...

ah....but to me the laptop is free as I already own it. The P2 are great put cost alot and the firestore is a fair bit of money for a 100gig drive. I'll get one 16gb P2 for Steadicam work and use the laptop for any shoulder shots and tripod. Plus the speed of not having to transfer. So the ability to build a edit during a shoot while most are doing transfers. As for the bag to use........? lets hope I find one that won't catch fire...
