Has anyone successfully edited 1080/24pa footage with 720/pn variable framerated footage?

I am filming a music video and I want to mix slow motion, time-lapse and realtime=23.98fps footage. I love 1080/24pa but it wont shoot in variable frame rates.

I could easily film the entire project in 720/pn...changing the frame rates when needed. However...I want to take advantage of the 1080/24pa as much as possible due to its high end quality.

Does anyone suggest mixing 1080/24pa footage with 720/pn(variable frame rates)?

I am editing the footage on Final Cut Pro 5.1.4.

Should I put it on a 1080/24pa timeline and uprezz the 720/pn footage? (how do i do that on final cut?)

...Or should I put it in a 720/24pn timeline and downrez the 1080/24pa.

so...should i just stick with 720pn the whole way through...or shoot the real time footage in 1080/pA with all of the variable frame rate footage in 720?

Much help is appreciated!

I'd shoot 720 all the way. I thought you'd be better off trying downrez your 1080 rather than uprez your 720. 720 looks fantastic aswell.

thanks for the insight!

I agree with you about downrezing the 1080 into 720 being a better thing. When I did some info searching...some had mentioned that downrezing 1080 into 720 is better than uprezing 720 into 1080 because the 1080 holds more image information...makes sense.

It seems to me that mixing 1080/pa with 720/pnVariableRates would cause a lot of hassle because the whitebalance-Iris reading changes whenever you switch from 1080 to 720. Perhaps all of that extra work isn't worth the extra detail?

Does the frame-rate hack work for 1080?(i doubt it...but also wish it were true)

I don't think a hack exists for 1080. I find i'm shooting just about everything in 720 these days. I shoot a lot of TVC's and 720/50p works great for quick moving stuff. And the fact that you can switch to pn mode for slow-mo so quickily is awesome. I really don't think i'll get a lot of use out of 1080 unless something really requires it.
