What kind of external Audio Mixer is good to use with my FCP system? How do I hook it up to the computer so I can mix my tracks?

Bang for the buck - check out Mackie. As far as mixing goes...a very big question that needs more info. If your just mixing stereo you may not need a mixer - just hook the stereo sound card outs to some decent speakers and mix away. Surround? Whole other can of worms. Are you trying to mix more than two tracks?

Behringer stuff are very good bang for the buck, more so then Mackie. *Mackie, of course, being above Behringer in quality, but the price difference is substantial. *I use an Eurorack UB1204FX-PRO mixer ($190US) with Truth B2031 monitors ($500US). Great sound for the price.

Okay so do I hook the mixer up to the sound card on the computer? Will I be able to mix audio (yes there will be more than 2 tracks) that I have on my timeline BEFORE I export it out? If so how do I get FCP to recognize the external mixer?

Now that I think of it, I guess I can run it out of the computer into the mixer and output to tape. But what if I was going to DVD could I do it that way too?

I use a Mackie VLZ-1402 and mackie HR824 monitors... SWEET sounding setup. Final cut doesnt care if you have a mixer or a hairdryer hooked up to your computer, it doesn't "see" either one. *;) It simply inputs/outputs it's audio signals along the signal path you tell it to. (I'm using a matroxRTMac card, so my audio out of FCP comes out of the matrox box, then into my mixer). You can send it out of your built in audio jack on your Mac as well. I do all my audio mixing in-computer (in FCP, or protools for intricate mixes)... no external mixes. I rambled, but hope that clarifies a bit for you...

Shooter, if you do not have uncompressed capabilities (i.e. CineWave, Io, RTMac, etc) and are using firewire in/out, hook the mixer up to your DV deck (this might be your camera) and the results will be great. Just be sure the dexk is hooked via firewire.

I was looking for same info..wandered into Ken Stone's site Kenstone.net, and he has great instructions/diagrams for hooking up the system your talking about, and he uses a Mackie for illustration! I have Mackie..love it! Good luck!
