So I was looking for locations for my next horror movie, and I stumbled upon this old abandoned mental institution online which is about 15-20 minutes from my home.

thats it!
so i went there today with my dvx to see how it looked etc, and i get there and start taking shots and a cop pulls up and says that im tresspassing and that i have to leave etc. so i do.
but my question: could i get like a permit to shoot here? or is that just out of my league impossible?
look at these pics! http://forgottenphotography.com/greystone/index.html

Your best bet is to get in touch with your film commission (http://www.njfilm.org/)
They should be able to point you in the right direction.
I doubt if anyone here is going to be able to give you specific advice about a location in your area.
By the way, I'm assuming you've seen 'Session 9' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danvers_State_Hospital)?
If you haven't - go rent it.

Gawd what a fabulous site!
Only person who can sign a location permit is the legal owner - check with whatever entity collects local property taxes, they'll have ownership rolls and a place to start. In many places you can do it all online. Once you know who it is, get some background on them so you'll know how to tailor your pitch.

Hey - it costs nothing except preparation to ask, nothing ventured etc etc
Good Luck !

So it looks like Morris County owns the facility now. I'd contact New Jersey's film commission first and see if they can help. Good film commissions will cut through the red tape to get you amazing locations, but be prepared to pony up for liability/production insurance, it's unlikely the county will let you on that location without insurance.
