Can 5.1 surround sound be achieved using FCP? A friend of mine at work is thinking about getting FCP on a powerbook but he wanted his stuff to be in surround sound since he has a home theater.
Do you have to purchase a plug in?

Although it wasn't designed for 5.1 mixing, FCP4 can handle it if you have a 6 channel output, but I recommend doing your mix with Bias Deck 3.5. *
Just output an omf from FCP - it doesn't matter how many tracks - and import it into Deck. * Select "5.1" in Deck's preferences (as opposed to stereo) and the PAN slider will change to a circle with a green dot in the middle. * Now you can position the "dot" for each track where you would like the sound to come from in the room.
You can also turn on the LFE channel for subwoofer output and set the Hz level where you would like low frequency sounds to be directed to the sub channel.
You can also "keyframe" record all of your pan and level moves (when you want sounds to "fly" from one corner to another.)
When you mix is finished, output it to your hard drive. *It will create 6 separate aif files. * Assuming you own DVD Studio Pro, you can now use A.Pack to combine the 6 separate files in to single AC3 Dolby Digital encoded file and author your DVD!
A Deck 3.5 trial for can be downloaded for free! I think it lasts 30 days. http://www.bias-inc.com
I'll have to check out Deck. I've been doing it through protools for years.
