I'm buying some skateboard wheels to build a dolly. Bearings I'm buying seperately from another company.
I just read somewhere that I need two bearings for each wheel. Is this true? one for each side of the wheel, I'm assuming?
Im going with 16 wheels... so I need 32 bearings??

Nevermind. I found the answer, and YES, you need two bearings for each wheel.
BUT... one set (of bearings) is 8 actual bearings.

Did you find a good deal on wheels and bearing? I've been hunting for a few weeks. Any help would be awesome!

I spent under $60 on 20 wheels and 40 bearings.
Got them off of ebay, from this site.

Haven't gotten them yet (I placed the order today), but I'm sure it'll work out just fine. If it doesn't roll as smoothly as I hope, I'll buy higher quality bearings... although I HIGHLY doubt I'll need to go that far.

I got my wheels and bearings from SlamNCity too! Great stuff! ha! It looks like they are catching on to us DIY dolly builders..

Not too keen on the white wheels.. Personally I went with Black..
Also did you ask to have your bearings pressed in for you? I did and they hooked me up.. It's not hard to do it yourself, but it's nice to just open the box and slap the wheels on your dolly! ;-)

I wouldn't go with skateboard wheels or rollerblade. Look for "roller skate" wheels. The bearings are a breeze to put in and they're wider. That's just my opinion though.

Skateboard wheels are the norm for low budget dolly's. I don't know why, but that's what's on set, and that's what everyone recommends (from movie sets), so that's what I went with.
I did not ask them to press them, and didn't know I could... but I wish I knew that was an option. Oh well, I can handle it.
I just sent them an email requesting four more wheels, cause they don't offer the specific wheels in sets of four (ony sets of 20). Ideally, I'd like 24 wheels total for the dolly I'm building. I'm going with a staggered setup, and 6 wheels per "corner" (3 on outside, 3 on inside, staggered).
I'll go ahead and take pics and post my findings in a new thread when all the materials get here. I'm planning on adding a few small details that I havent' seen done around here withthe DIY dolly's. Maybe I can contribute a bit
Next week.

The skateboard and rollerblade wheels have a certain amount malleability to it that lets them absorb small discrepancies on the track, giving a smoother run along it. The skateboard wheels are ideal for DIY track dollies and the rollerblade wheels are ideal for DIY mini skater dollies. I have made both.

Yes, teddy is correct. I wanted rollerblade wheels for my dolly with the angle bracket an all so it would roll on the pvc. But rollerblade wheels have a round edge giving it very little surface area contacting the pipe. Not such a big deal but take into consideration rollerblade wheels are thinner and slightly taller than skateboard wheels. And that creates more flex in the wheel, more pressure on the bearings, and possibly a chance for the wheel to become misaligned. (tweaked) For a lighter application it probably wouldnt matter much. However my dolly has weight to it, and allows for a rider (me) whom has weight to him as well. OUch! I am so harsh on myself.

Roller Skate, not rollerblade. There's a big difference. From edge to edge on a rollerskate it's wider than a rollerblade and a skateboard wheel. It makes rolling on pvc pipe a lot smoother. I think the majority went with DIY skateboard wheels because nobody has ever mentioned the use of a roller skate wheels...maybe once or twice i've seen it.

Car30,
thats what i meant. Roller skate wheels are made from a tougher material than the skateboard wheels which makes slight bumps on the PVC more pronounced than if you are using skateboard wheels which has a slight malleability to it making it more forgiving on the PVC imperfections. These imperfections could be , dirt, or the joint of two pieces.
The width of it isnt a big deal because the contact area needed for the round PVC with the wheel isnt that wide. Whats critical is its material, and profile.
KDWAG, is correct that the roller blade has a tall profile as compared to the lower profile of the skateboard wheel making it less susceptible to being misaligned and wobbles.
Of course, you may find a new technology in rollerskate wheels which could be ideal. But i havent found them yet.

I went with this guy also, bought 100 bearings in another auction...
the 20 wheel setup with 5 each corner staggered is very smooth.
