I have this one strange problem here.... which i don't know where to start to solve it ...

My last 2 recordings had some bad audio problems with lots of pops and hiss' at a certain frequency. It's actually not loud enough to over the audio level. It's just a bit pass the first few red bars in the audio indicator.

I had my ALC turned on. I used only onboard mic. Before my last 2 recordings, everything seems fine to me... without those pops and hiss.

In one of the event, I used a mixture of an XLR input and another one with onboard mic. The input from XLR is superb and very clean. but the channel with the onboard mic suffers badly even though i adjusted the volume knob to be quite low, around 10 o'clock. It still came out with hiss and pops. I captured using a small camcorder and also with dvx results turned out same.

Now i'm faced with 2 problems, first how to solve my previous recordings with those pops and hiss....

and ... what is the real problem in my case ???

really needed help badly. another event coming up this weekend.....:crybaby:

The clean recording you can double up in post, delete the offending channel. The other recordings with pops and hiss your most likely stuck unless you can partition it off with an EQ program like mine....Isotope ozone-3. Time for some mics and maybe a mixer, but you need to post in the audio forum

ya... i did think about doubling it up in post... but then i lost a lot of ambience sound recording from the audience... but seems like that's the best way to me.

can the eq program clean up the noise in the sound ? or maybe if you can roughly guide me on how to do it ? ( more on the isotop ozone-3 )

do you mean here that the onboard mic is faulty ?

1. Turn the ACL off when using your onboard mic. - It's just a simple electronic compressor with NO control. You can add one in post and have all the control you may need. - I suspect the compressor is exadurating some of the noises comming into the mic.

I've never been impressed with the onboard mic... Here's what I'd suggest.

Use either a lav (if single subject) or a shotgun use another shotgun for ambiance or just record "wild" audio if you only have one mic. The preamps are fairly good in the DVX the mic can't really compare to a decent shotgun - most of which are cheap enough to rent on any budget from your local rental house.

If your inclined and ambitious... I have a friend who took a mono mic cable and split it into two mono's.. he then runs the thwo int the DVX and keeps one level as hot as he can and the other 5db down or whatever. This way if the hot signal distorts he can switch to the lower level as a backup.

I suspect your poping and hissing was just a product of the onboard compressor and the onboard mic.

hi guys ...

thanks for your feedbacks... will try it out the next time with the ALC function.

But is there any other way to determine whether is my onboard mic faulty or to prevent it from happening again ? As currently I do not have time to buy a mic. Most probably I will need to rent one temporarily ...

Would really appreciate anyone who has time to download my file and listen to it...
from what i see in audition. those cracks and pops are above 15,000 hz.
