alright this might sound crazy...
my girlfriends 40 gb ipod photo broke and while trying to fix it i realized the headphoen jack was the problem, i called a friend who also had an old ipod photo, but his with a broken screen, i swtiched the parts and my gfs works great, now i have this other ipod, the headphones clickwheel, nothing works, except the harddrive....
i have been using it as a "portabel hard drive" and i was thinking, if i hooked it up to my dvx, would my camera be able to record onto the 40gb hard drive?????
also, what settings do you need to change ont eh dvx to do this.. i cant remember, i know theres a way to have the dvx record on the tape or an external unit, i cant find it in the menus...
there is a product that is 'near release' that says it will do this for you. it is called the Catapult
Here is the link (http://www.bella-usa.com/Catapult.htm)

Here is a link to The Bella Corporation (http://www.bella-usa.com/Catapult.htm) this is the company that was advertising the Catapult. It appears as though it is not like the firestore which has a hard drive, but only a device allowing you to record to a portable hard drive like an Ipod. $300 bucks, still not available. This would be great if there were 100Gb flash drives :)

Love where you're going with this. I can't believe how much they charge for a P2 card or other external storage for the HVX. I tried putting in a flash card (the connectors are the same) but the camera said it was the wrong format. I guess no one's willing to tear apart their camera to find a cheaper storage method... Let us know if you find a way to make the iPod (or anything else) work!

I don't think you can record directly to an iPod. You can record to a P2 Card on an HVX and then transfer to an iPod, I don't think direct recording works.
Catapult is the closest solution.

Susan - the p2 cards are only similiar to PCMCIA flash in the casing they use - P2 is 4 SD chips in a striped RAID array.

Yeah, you're right, jdaida, I knew that when I tried it. Figured it wouldn't hurt since the connectors were the same. It seems like storage is storage and the price of the P2 cards are stunning considering you can get 16 G of other storage for SO much less, RAID or no RAID. My 500G HD cost $100 and I still can't wrap my head around paying so much more for just 16G. I'm surprised more people aren't trying to see if iPods and other devices work as external storage.

Well, because we already have. And we've come to the conclusion that it can only be used as an offload device unless someone develops something like the Catapult.
There are hundreds of HVX users here, we've all come up with the same ideas. Just hang around in the HVX200 section.
And better still, buy yourself two 4 gig or 8 gig cards and offload to an iPod.
I use 3 8gig cards and can't see myself needing anymore than that in the future. They fit on DVD's, I can offload quickly from laptop to external HDD which is way cheaper than 16gb p2 cards.

I use the dvx but have a question regarding the HVX. A lot of people are using the FS100 (which is hella expensive as well) what medium does that use from the camera? Is it just from the firewire port?

Yes. It's the firewire port. At the same time, the Firestore has a controller built-in to do this.
Which was what the Cineporter was supposed to be and what Catapult does as well for an iPod or whatever.

I'm just thinking.... if the catapult comes out, and you can record 60p thru that to say a flash drive... at the rate the flashdrives are coming down, this essentially would abolish the need for p2. Those P2 cards are so dang expensive.
