I'm new to this craft, getting ready to purchase FCP4. Is the tutorial that comes with the software adequate for a pilgrim to learn the software, or should I consider a secondary tutorial (either book or DVD/CD)? ???

It really depends on how you learn, but my suggestion would be to get you hands on as mush info as possible. Some of the best editors will use more than one resource because some author explain things better than others.
My 2 cents

You might also consider some online or CD learning such as:

I never purchased any of the training CDs but I did subscribe to their online courses which are the same. I liked it and for 25 bucks a month for access I was able to take several courses during the 3 months I used. They have more titles than Lynda.com which is another online and CD course supplier I like. If you check the free chapters you get a good feel for how the courses will go.

Thanx Foosiemac,
I am trying to understand if they go into enough detail, as Max is quite deep. For $25 a month, good deal.

This book by Jerry Hofmann is incredible. It includes footage from a film for you to play with, etc.

As far as best ways to learn a new software, you can't go wrong with a good tutorial DVD that you learn from as you go along with the projects on your computer. For example when I first started learning after effects, I read and went through dozens of books on the market at the time. I litereally went through about 9 FAT tutorial books which took months and years really. Finally I came across total trainings tutorial sets. I wished I would have picked up their sets of dvds from the beggining! Anyway I don't work for the company but from my limited expereience, they really have their stuff togethor overthere. www.totaltraining.com
If anybody is in Hollywood write me, I can still be a good resource for AE,Photoshop, Illustrator tips from going through and owning the whole series of tapes from total training....
