This is my one and only post to this forum.
I've been lurking here for the past 7-10 months. I'm not a commercial videographer nor am I aspiring to make a Hollywood production (yikes, I live in Hollywood!). I don't make any money from filming and have no plans to do so. My income comes solely from my position as a college instructor and from grants, and from the occasional gallery sale. I have a MFA from a well-respected art school in Southern California (hint: Tim Burton's alma mater) and took some film classes with the late Johan van der Keuken, Harun Farocki, and other visiting faculty. But my work is in still photography.
Many years ago I bought a Sony TRV-950. I played around and made a few shorts while learning FCP. I studied film theory and taught a class on contemporary Asian film.
I played around a bit more (and got good with FCP) and began to enjoy the challenge of the moving image combined with audio; a new paradigm for me in visual language. And now I'm ready to produce new artwork.
I feel it's appropriate to thank all the participants of DVXuser for the wealth of information that they so freely pass on. Thanks to your generosity and time, I purchased the HVX (I like the workflow, 16:9 native in SD, and the choice of frame rates and recording modes). I'll be working in SD tape for now (I only plan to output on DVD), but will appreciate the DVCPro HD format and going tapeless once the P2 (and Blu-Ray) dust settles down.
And thanks to Birns and Sawyer in Hollywood. A great friendly staff. I knew what I wanted, they had one in stock, and it was a super quick and painless sale (expect that Paul McCartney was at Amoeba Records next door doing a free gig and the traffic was a bloody nightmare!!!). The box has a UPS Express label from Matsushi*a in Osaka and the date is 19 June. So I'm assuming it has the latest firmware. (From the label it looks like B and S ordered 10 and I have 9/10, so I guess they're selling fast).
Again, thanks so much for all the time you've spent with your posts educating the masses (me). Jarred Land, Barry Green, Jan Crittenden, and everyone else --I appreciate it very much! This forum is a great resource.
Best to all of you in your endeavors.
