Diy-raid

Does anyone know a bit about building a raid?
I am on a powerbookG4 soon to upgrade.... but limited for now and I need to build a raid.
I currently edit video off of 5 external 1394b drives.
I would like to put them all in one shell and raid the drives for safety.

Can this be built with fw 800 and esata connections out the back of the tower?
I was looking at this: http://www.macgurus.com/productpages/sata/satakits.php
as a possibility, but dont understand how the raid function would be added....

I've seen Raid enclosures starting around $100. Why would you want to go through all the trial and error (emphasis on error!), when you could just buy one and be done?

Personally, I'll drop $100 NOT to have to get cut up and frustrated.
