To Anybody who wants to respond,
I'm just trying to get a general Idea here. How hold is your DVX100 and how many hours do you have on it?
thanks!

I never use the camera to digitize/capture footage, nor should you.

Does anybody know what is considered high mileage... near the end, as far as hours go? I want to keep my dvx forever, even when panasonic comes out with super-dupper hd. with taste, touch, and smell.

I have head that the heads should be service free for up to 1000 hours if treated right.

so it looks like you guys are averaging about 75 hours per year. pretty consistent.
how often do you clean the heads?
and i know this question has been done to death, but what kind of tapes are you using?

1 hour and 00 hours. Still charging up the battery! Very excited, like a child in fact. GlobalMediaPro.com is THE place to buy PAL cameras in Europe, I've concluded. It is the DVX100BE, with CE mark, so a good warranty, under £1600, including the VAT, delivered the next day for free. WOW this camera is cool. I am going to run up as many hours as I can this year.

The manual says to change every 2000 hours, wonder if anyone ever got that far?

almost 2 years, 76 hours.
Just a question for a non-super-englishtalking-swede ;-). What do you mean with "non-digitized"?
love my cam by the way :cheesy:

trezpasser, that means they only use the camera to shot footage and not as a tape deck to aquire or digitize footage into the computer.

Hey
I accidentally left it in my car on a very hot day. Thats the only thing that I did different right before it reset the hours by itself. I didnt do anything on purpose to do it.

Not a DVX, but a DVC60 - 7 months, roughly 110 hours. (ahh, the fun of being an ENG shooter)

9 months today July 06! 97 hrs. Minimal digitizing! Never ever used anything but Panasonic Consumer, Professional Quality (mostly used), and Master Quality tapes! Stay away from anything else.

probably uses a cheap camcorder to capture with so the wear goes on the cheap camcorders heads and not his dvx's.

Yep. Or a deck. Digitizing with the DVX itself is a no-no if you want it to last. The idea of digitizing through the DVX makes me cringe.

I've had mine since February it has 35 hours on it but I have never captured with it once. I have a cheap panny mini dv cam that works great for capturing.

thanks guys - i was clueless on that. would've assumed using a cheap different cam would compromise the quality. peace out,

all replies welcomed, thanks!

I am using a Sony DSR-11 to capture right now. It works great! Does anyone recommend NOT using it for capture and getting a cheap cam instead? I ask because I'm getting ready to purchase one for my home studio.

Buy a crappy capture cam, less wear and tear on your GOOD camera's heads
EDIT- read it wrong, is it a capture deck? you should be fine
DVXWPB
09-18-2007, 08:06 PM
TheComo, are you saying that the DSR-11 has more robust heads - is designed for more hours? My uneducated (very) would be that the head would be the same in both the deck and the cam.

Capture decks are designed for capturing.
A cheap solution would be to buy a mini-DV camera. That's what I'd do personally.

My guess is that you are fine with what you got. You said something about buying something, buying what, a tape deck or a capture c amera?
Im prtty sure your deck is fine, just dont use your dvx, or whatever camera you got, it wont KILL it, but its just less wear and tear if u dont use your DVX.
Back me up guys!!

here's an additional thoughts guys - i have a panasonic camera so i use panasonic tapes. i read it's bad to use tapes that are made by a company that isn't the same as the one that made your camera. does this bear relevance when it comes to digitizing? will i muck up my tapes with foreign brand oils if i use , say, in my case, a sony cam for this purpose?
my guess is that perhaps it would if you were to use the same tapes in your main camera again later after digitizing. any thoughts?
cheers!
Robbie Comeau

Try and use Panasonic tapes. IF you switch to another brand like Sony, RUN a head clean through your camera FIRST, then put the Sony tape in and go record.

so 'brand congruence' is the best bet. thanks for the head cleaning tip. cheers!
