View Full Version : POLL: HV20 Wobble?
This poll is for OWNERS and USERS of the Canon HV20 only.
I am almost ready to pull the trigger on this purchase, (coming from a DVX100 Classic™) but I wanted to hear definitively from users and owners if the wobble effect was a deal breaker, or if it was possible to work around the issue. I understand that different users will have different experiences depending upon the conditions of the camera's usage.
Thanks for participating!
since I can't vote I would like to say the wobble issue stopped me from buying.

I don't have a HV20, even though I've seen some amazing footage. I truly feel the wobble issue is a shame, because if I know that there's 0,1% chance of it happening during a professional shoot it really cannot be trusted. I'm really toying with the idea of eventually buying one, but after all that has been seen on the forums I would NEVER use it for a pro shoot. I could maybe use it as a B camera for my A1, knowing that if the wobble presented it self I would have my main shot guaranteed with the A1. It's a shame and the second Canon deals with it (if they do) I'll have no doubt about defying the limits of this little wonder.

I voted SOMETIMES because that's the experience I had with my HV20. I could work around it but I agree completely with rawfa, I couldn't trust it on a professional and/or payed shoot.
I am also toying with the idea of buying one (again) to use for personal projects where money transitions aren't involved, or just for learning how to shoot. As long as I am in total control of the situation and have all the time in the world to stabilize or do retakes until the shot looks good, it's all good.
The HV20 is however obviously not at all suited for videos that need the shaky handheld look because if it shakes it will most likely wobble as well.
I plan on using the HV20 with my Brevis adapter, so any handheld work I might do would probably be accomplished via the use of a wide angle lens (17mm - 28mm). Mostly tripod work for everything else, feature film type stuff. So this poll makes me relax a bit, and I'll probably give the HV20 a shot.
Thanks to everyone who voted!

I've never seen any wobbling in my footage. Not the first time and I go full telephoto a lot - knock on wood.

I've never had any problems with wobble in my HV20 footage.
I also have a CMOS-based Sony HC3, and have done many car mount shots with no wobble.

We tested with the HV20/Brevis a great deal...no wobble. The majority of our shooting with this camera is typically on tripod though at 1/48s.

No wobble here. I'm a bit worried to shoot anything too serious with it, however.
I have a feature planned for November/December. It's a low-budget type shoot that would benefit from shooting with 2 or even 3 HV20's and a Brevis setup on one of them. That said, I'm still evaluating. Might just rent the HVX since my DVX is gone.
But again, no wobble here.

You had one? What made you give it up?
