is there anyway to change the color of the fade? I would really like to use a white "flash" instead of the black. any suggestions?

Uh, what transition are you using? If you're simply crossfading from the end of the clip to the timeline, then you might want to instead add a white slug after your clip and crossfade between them.

Instead of a cross fade, you can substitute it with a dip to color dissolve and fade it to white as well.

As I am still learning my system, how do you make your slug white?

instead of a slug, use a color matte over in the pop up window located on the bottom right corner of the viewer. then go to the controls tab in the viewer and change the color to white.
